Eric's father was Lewis Harold Sayce and his mother was Annie Brereton. His maternal grandparents were Edward Brereton and Mary Hooley. He had two brothers and a sister, named Harold, Harry and Doris. He was the third oldest of the four children. He died at the age of 66 in March 1975 in Birmingham.²
