Mary was born in 1767 in Barnhill and her baptism took place on May 20th, 1767 in Malpas.¹

  In the Brereton book, it is reported that Mary was born in Malpas in 1779, but this is 10 years different to her age at death (65, so born 1769). 1769 of Barthill.
  
  The marriage record confirms Mary Tomlinson is from Broxton.

  Also, she may have been the niece (not daughter) of Randle Tomlinson, an important farmer of Malpas who was witness to her marriage.

Mary's father was Thomas Tomlinson and her mother was Phoebe Owens. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, William, Patrick, Phebe and Betty. She was the oldest of the seven children. She died at the age of 67 on December 19th, 1834 in Harthill. Her burial was on December 23rd, 1834 at All Saints, Harthill.¹²

  Mary is buried at Harthill, in the same grave as John and Elizabeth Brereton of Bolesworth Hall. John was probably her oldest son, and elizabeth his wife.
  
  The headstone inscription reads: "In the Memory of Mary Wife of William Brereton of Harthill who died Dec 19th 1834 Aged 65 Years". See reference and picture.

General Notes
- According to the headstone, Mary was born about 1769 (65 when died), but baptism was in 1767, so 33 when she married William and 67 when died.
  
  Probably sister of Thomas (butcher) and Martha Tomlinson of Barnhill, Broxton. Also William Tomlinson (servant) and Martha his wife.
  
  In 1826 Mary Brereton of Broughton was sentanced to 14 days in Jail for larceny (theft).
