Margaret was born in June 1876 in Birkenhead.¹

Margaret's father was Robert Brereton and her mother was Jane Williams. Her paternal grandparents were George Brereton and Jane Hopley. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Robert, John, George, Jane, Ann and Mary. She was the youngest of the seven children. She had a half-sister named Lizzie.
