Mary was born in December 1842 in Horton.1  Mary's father was George Brereton and her mother was Jane Hopley.  Her paternal grandparents were William Brereton Jnr and Mary Tomlinson; her maternal grandparents were Robert Hopley and Margaret Richards. She had seven brothers and three sisters, named Richard, William, Robert, George, John, Charles, Thomas, Ann, Margaret and Jane.  She was the seventh oldest of the eleven children.  She died at 4 months old in April 1843 in Horton.  Her burial was on April 11th, 1843 in Tilston.2 2
