John was born in December 1843 in Horton and his baptism took place on December 29th, 1843 in Nantwich.1 2  John's father was George Brereton and his mother was Jane Hopley.  His paternal grandparents were William Brereton Jnr and Mary Tomlinson; his maternal grandparents were Robert Hopley and Margaret Richards. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Richard, William, Robert, George, Charles, Thomas, Ann, Margaret, Mary and Jane.  He was the eighth oldest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 50 in December 1893 in Birkenhead.3
