Richard was born in 1874 in Birkenhead.1   Richard's father was Richard Whitehead and his mother was Ann Bamford. He had four brothers and a sister, named Robert, Albert, Harold, Boland and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother named Elliott.
