The family recorded their marriage and childrens births at the Knarlesborough Quaker Meeting House, NE of Harrogate. However they were living at Rawdon early on, and later at Allerton, Bradford and then Calverley. The first reference to a Grimshaw in these parts is in the will of William Ives of Guiseley (an ancestor of the Yeadon mill family) in 1538 when he left a legacy to a Grimshaw. A direct line can be traced back to Edward Grimshaw (died 1635) who married Isabel Collier in 1588. He was a tenant of Francis Rawdon and had the chance of buying his freehold but did not have sufficient capital. A friend, perhaps John Marshall, did however purchase and Edward’s descendants remained tenants of Ivy House, Over Lane, until the 1880s though there were successive landlords. An indenture record for a grave plot dated 1788 bears the name (amongst several others) of John Grimshaw of Calverley, so unless there is another John Grimshaw, Quaker in Bradford, is appears John first came to Calverely before farming at Allerton.
