James was born in 1837 in Idle.1  James' father was James Grimshaw and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Fletcher.  His paternal grandparents were William Grimshaw and Hannah Hartley. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Benjamin, Abraham, Phoebe, John, Ann and Sarah.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
