Benjamin was born in June 1840 in Idle.1  Benjamin's father was James Grimshaw and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Fletcher.  His paternal grandparents were William Grimshaw and Hannah Hartley. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, James, Abraham, Phoebe, John, Ann and Sarah.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
