Thomas was born in 1835 in Idle.1  Thomas' father was James Grimshaw and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Fletcher.  His paternal grandparents were William Grimshaw and Hannah Hartley. He had five brothers and two sisters, named James, Benjamin, Abraham, Phoebe, John, Ann and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
