Edward's father was Richard Sill and his mother was Isabel Atkinson. His paternal grandparents were Edward Sill and Margaret Atkinson; his maternal grandparents were David Atkinson and Sarah Wilkinson. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Richard, David, Sarah and Margaret. He was the oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 40 in April 1763 in Preston-Patrick.
