Richard's father was Richard Sill and his mother was Isabel Atkinson. His paternal grandparents were Edward Sill and Margaret Atkinson; his maternal grandparents were David Atkinson and Sarah Wilkinson. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Edward, David, Sarah and Margaret. He was the second youngest of the five children.
