Richard was born on January 5th, 1209 in Winchester, Hampshire, England.  Richard's father was King John ("Lackland") I of England and his mother was Queen Isabella Taillefer of Angouleme.  His paternal grandparents were King Henry Curtmantle FitzEmpress ("Plantagenet") Plantagenet II of England and Princess Eleanor of Aquitaine; his maternal grandparents were Aymer Taillefer of Angouleme and Alice de Courtenay. He had a brother and two sisters, named Henry, Joan and Eleanor.  He was the second oldest of the four children. He had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named Richard, Hugh, William and Joan.  He died  due to natural causes at the age of 63 on April 2nd, 1272 in Berkhamsteadcast, Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire, England.  He was buried on April 13th, 1272 in Hailes Abbey, Hailes, Gloucestershire, England.

‌Richard and Sancha were married in a religious ceremony on November 23rd, 1243 in Westminster Abbe, Westminster, Middlesex, England.  They had a son named Richard.
