Son Charles had left home by 1851 (missing) to live in Horwich and in 1856 James, a Goods Porter of Horwich, son of Joseph a farmer married Betty Crook, daughter of Daniel. 

In 1851, Joseph, an Agricultural labourer, and Betty (52 & 49) were at Guide Post, Turton with Elizabeth (24), Sophia (22), Frances (19), Alice (16), Jane (14), John (12), Joseph (10), James (8) and Sarah Ann (5).  Dorothy Cooper (16) was also with them.

In 1858, Joseph was a Publican and Farmer when daughter Alice married.

In 1861, Joseph and Betty (63 & 57) were still farming 4 acres, at Bromley Cross, Turton, and Joseph was also a beerseller.  He is listed at the Railway Hotel, Bromiley Cross, Turton in Worrall's Trade Directory.  At the same time, John Kay was a farmer at Mather fold and also a beer retailer at Cox green.

In 1871, Joseph and Betty (73 & 66) were farming 24 acres of land at Lower House, Turton.  They had their spinster daughter Frances with them.

In 1881 Joseph died a Gentleman "formerly of Turton but late of Breightmet". 1803 - 1873 Betty (Elizabeth) Cooper 69 69 Recorded as Elizabeth on 1841 census, but Betty all on Marriage and Birth records.

In 1841, Joseph and Eliozabeth (40 & 35) were at High Know Mill, Farmers with 9 children.  Neighbours were William and Ann Cooper (65 & 60), her parents.

In 1851, Joseph, an Agricultural labourer, and Betty (52 & 49) were at Guide Post, Turton with Elizabeth (24), Sophia (22), Frances (19), Alice (16), Jane (14), John (12), Joseph (10), James (8) and Sarah Ann (5).  Dorothy Cooper (16) was also with them.

In 1871, Joseph and Betty (73 & 66) were farming 24 acres of land at Lower House, Turton.

In 1873, Betty Mather died as was buried at Bradshaw.  The record shows she was from Turton.  However, it is possible this was Elizabeth Farrand who was also alive in 1871, aged 68.
 1835 - 1913 Alice Mather 78 78 In 1858, Alice aged 23 married Robert Chadwick at Walmsley Christ Church.  She was the first Mather to be married there.

Alice took over the business after Robert died.  She was an employer in 1911, aged 76 1833 - 1897 Andrew Mather 64 64 Andrew had left home by 1851 working as a Blacksmith at Tottington Lower End.

In 1856, Andrew Mather was a witness at Charles's marriage to Betty Crook

2 Nov 1861 Andrew Mather (28), a Journeyman Blacksmith son of Joseph Mather a farmer married Anne Jones (spinster), daughter of Ellis a coal agent at the Wesleyan Chapel, Chester.  Both were living at Saltney.

In 1881 Andrew Mather was a publican at Wrexham Street, Mold, Flintshire (see father's Probate). 1825 - 1889 Charles Mather 63 63 This Charles married Betty Crook of Sharples in 1856 (so was not with parents in 1851).  Another Charles Mather of similar age from Edgworh married a younger Betty Crompton.

In 1861, Charles was a Licenced Victular at Egerton.

In 1871, Charles (44) was a Railway Goods Porter at Droylsden, Manchester with wife Betty (37) and 5 children.

In 1881 Charles was a Railway Points Man, still at Droylsden. His wife Betty had died in 1877 so Charles was a widower.

Charles died at Droylsden in 1889.  Charles, Betty and three daughters Sarah, Alice and Betsy Jane are buried at the United Reform Churchyard, Egerton (the only Mather burials there).

Elizabeth and Thomas had 6 children, 3 of each. 1831 - 1885 Frances Mather 54 54 In 1861, Frances was unmarried, aged 30.

In 1871, Frances Mather, daughter, aged 40 was at the Lower House, Turton (farm) with her parents Joseph and Betty.

in 1881, Francis Mather, 50, was aunt (and Walter, 18 cousin) to Joseph & Mary Radcliffe 1837 - 1904 Jane Mather 66 66 In 1861, Jane was still at home, unmarried, aged 24.

In April 1871, John and Jane were still unmarried together at Bromley Cross, Turton.  John (31) was an Inn Keeper and sister Jane (33) a house keeper.  February, the following Jane was living at Old Trafford when she married a much older Daniel Constantine by Licence.

In 1881 Daniel and Jane (66 & 44)  were at Breightmet with daugher Martha (30), James (27) and Mary (25) 1839 - 1883 John Mather 44 44 In 1871, John and Jane were together at Bromley Cross, Turton.  John (31) was an Inn Keeper and sister Jane (33) a house keeper.

In 1876, John Mather (and father Joseph) was proprieter of the Railway Hotel, Bromiley Cross. 

In 1880, John is recorded at Bromiley Cross, Turton, Public House.

John died at the Railway Hotel, Bromiley Cross in 1883, two years after his father. 1840 - 1913 Joseph Mather 72 72 In 1861, Joseph (20) was a Grocer's Apprentice living with his married sister Sophia Isherwood

Joseph and James were Wholesale Grocers in 1871 at 96 Bradford Street, Tonge with Haulgh, with sister Sarah Ann (22) also with them.

Brothers Joseph and James, still single, are provision dealers in 1881 at Tonge-with-Haulgh.

Joseph made his fortune and retired a gentleman in sunny Birkdale. His address was 10 Liverpool Road, so he may have still been a grocer or provision dealer.  He soon married Jane Ann Balmer (Annie).  Joseph was 46 and Annie 35.  They had three children.

In 1911 Joseph had been married 24 years to Annie and was a retired provision dealer living in Southport.  They had three children. 1829 - 1896 Sophia Mather 67 67 19 Feb 1854, Sophia Mather (or Marther on marriage record)  married Henry Isherwood.  She signed her name Mather. 1843 - 1891 James Mather 48 48 Joseph and James were Wholesale Grocers in 1871 at 96 Bradford Street, Tonge with Haulgh, with sister Sarah Ann (22) also with them.

Brothers Joseph and James, still single, are provision dealers in 1881 at Tonge-with-Haulgh. 1845 - 1915 Sarah Ann Mather 70 70 Sarah Ann lived with her daughter Annin (in 1911).  She left her estate of £1235 to her. 1845 Mary Ann Cape Mary was from Cumberland where here parents (John and Mary) were an Inkeeper.

Mary's father was John Cape, who, like John Mather, was also an Inn Keeper.

In 1881, Mary, aged 36, was with John, 40, an Inn Keeper at 75 Railway Street (The Railway Tavern), with Ada Elliott Telford (18) and John Joseph Telford (17), her niece and nephew.  Mary seems to have had no children of her own. 1831 - 1890 Henry Isherwood 58 58 Henry was the son of John Isherwood, a farmer from Turton and mother Mary.

In 1853, Henry Isherwood was witness to Thomas and Elizabeth's marriage.  He married Sophia, Elizabeth's sister the following year (19 Feb 1854).

In 1855, the year after they married Mary's birth was registered at Sharples.  In 1856-59 two daughters births were registered Eastern Bolton office before they moved to West Bolton.

In 1871, Henry and Sophia (40 & 42) were at 133 New Road, Halliwell with Mary, Alice, Esther and Elizabeth (14, 14, 9, 7).

In 1881, Henry and Sophia Isherwood (49 & 53) were living at Banister Close, Bolton with daughters Alice, Margaret, Esther and Elizabeth (24, 22, 19 & 17) and Charles Mather (nephew, 9) 1834 - 1877 Betty Crook 43 43 Daughter of Daniel and Mary Crook

Charles, Betty and three daughters Sarah, Alice and Betsy Jane are buried at the United Reform Churchyard, Egerton (the only Mather burials there)
 1836 - 1892 Robert Chadwick 56 56 Robert, a Dyer was the son of John Chadwick, another Publican, like many of this Mather family he married into.

In 1871 Robert was a sucessfull finisher of printed calico cloth, employing 12 men and 14 young men and boys, living in Stretford, Lancashire.

In 1892 when his bro-in-law James Mather died, a part of the estate (probably over £3,000) was left to Robert.

Robert and Alice lived at 39 Withington Road, Brook's Bar, Manchester until they both died
 1861 - 1918 Amelie (Annie) Chadwick 56 56 Born Anne Mather and baptised Amelie.

Annie left her estate to her spinster sister, Sarah Jane.  They were both wealthy spinsters at the end! 1863 - 1938 Sarah Jane Chadwick 75 75 1829 - 1917 Thomas Roscoe 88 88 Thomas was the son of James Roscoe.  Both were engineers.

In 1871, Thomas and Elizabeth Roscoe (42 & 44) were at Toppings, Turton with 5 children.

In 1881, Thomas and Elizabeth Roscoe (52 & 54) were at 155 Toppings Road, Turton with 6 children.

Daughter Sarah Jane Roscoe married Thomas Hill.  Thomas Roscoe of 93 Hough Lane, Eagley died 16 Dec 1917 leaving £161.  Thomas Hill husband of Sarah Jane was the executor.

 1853 Mary Mather 1849 - <1891 Samuel Cunliffe 42 42 Samuel's father was also Samuel, a silk and woollen dyer and his mother was Mary from Perth, Scotland

Samuel was a grocer (1871) and provision merchant. 1872 Annie Cunliffe Annie Married Thomas Kitchen, a builder, 28 Jan 1895 1877 Sam (Samuel) Cunliffe 1879 - 1918 James Mather Cunliffe 38 38 1873 - 1878 Florence Cunliffe 5 5 1859 - 1923 Margaret Isherwood 63 63 Margaret (12) was with her uncle James in 1871.

Margared married Jesse (son of Jesse) Rothwell 29 Sep 1881.

Margaret, Jesse and daughter Nellie Entwistle are buried at Breightmet.   1855 Mary Isherwood In 1871, Mary (16) was hith her parents and sisters

Mary had left home bu 1881.  She married Joseph Thomas Ratcliffein 1878 at St James, Breightmet.

In 1881, Mary and Joseph T Ratcliffe (26 & 29) were at Derby Terrace with daughter Florence (1) and aunt Frances Mather (50) and her cousin Walter Mather (18)

In 1891, Joseph T and Mary Ratcliffe (39 & 36) had Florence (11), Bertha (9), Harry (6), Joseph (3) and Annie (1) 1856 Alice Isherwood 1890: Alice Isherwood of Vicrotia Terrace, Breightmet, Spinster the daughter, the Execuror of her father's Will. 1862 - 1926 Esther Isherwood 64 64 1863 - 1925 Elizabeth Isherwood 61 61 Elizabeth marriad Joseph Booth. 

In 1901, Joseph and Elizabeth Booth (34 & 37) were living with sisters Alice and Esther Isherwood (43 & 39) and (cousin) Charles Mather (29).

In 1925, Charles Mather, life assurance agent was her executor. 1852 Jane (Annie) Anne Balmer Jane Anne Balmer was 35 when she married in 1887, so born  about 1852.  Her father was John Balmer.  There were both at 10 Liverpool Road, Birkdale (a shopping parade). 1889 - 1966 Joseph Henry Mather 77 77 1891 James Balmer Mather 1892 - 1980 Annie Louise Mather 88 88 Annie Louise Mather married Walter Herman Scales (1887-1957) 1862 Sarah Jane Roscoe In 1871, Sarah Jane (niece, aged 9) was with John and Jane Mather at Bromley Cross, Turton.  Uncle John (31) was an Inn Keeper and his sister Jane (33) a house keeper. 1815 - 1885 Daniel (David) Constantine 70 70 In 1861 Daniel was a Heapley with wife Sarah, her mother Sarah Lever (83), and the three children.

In 1881 Daniel was employing 188 men, women and children at a cotton bleaching factory.

In 1891, "Maria" was 33 and head of family at Droylsden with brothers Joseph (31), Daniel (28), and sisters Ann (24 and Betsy J (17)

In 1901, Mary (43), was head of household, born Dunscar, Turton was living with Joseph (42) and Ann (34) in Droylsden.

In 1911, Mary and borther Joseph (53 & 53) were living with  their sister Ann and John H Bently (45 & 39).  Mary never married. 1859 - 1935 Joseph Mather 76 76 In 1891, Joseph (31) was at Droylsden with Maria, Daniel, Ann and Betsy

In 1901, Joseph (42) was living with his single sisters Mary (43) and Ann (34) at Droylsden.

In 1921, Joseph Mather (63, single, a Cow Man, bro-in-law), born Egerton in 1958 was living with his sister Ann Crook Bintley (56) and her husband John Horrocks Bintley (50), a farmer at Buffs Farm, Dimple, Egerton.  Also present were John's cousin Rachel Howarth (85, born Dunscar) and William Green (54, Horse Man and servant).

Joseph died 23 Dec 1935 and was buried at Droylsden Cemetery 28 Dec 1935 in the same grave as his brother Daniel.

15 Sep 1891, Daniel Mather, son of Charles (dec) of 168 Moorside Street, Droylsden married Susannah Morris at Heywood St James, North Bury.

Died Oct 1899.  Possibly died as Droylsden (as death registered there) and buried at Egerton. 1875 - 1875 Joseph Mather Cunliffe 1m 1m 1832 - 1901 Ann Jones 69 69 Ann's father was Ellis Jones, a coal agent (according to Wedding Cert).

2 Nov 1861 Andrew Mather (28), a Journeyman Blacksmith son of Joseph Mather a farmer married Anne Jones (spinster), daughter of Ellis a coal agent at the Wesleyan Chapel, Chester.  Both were living at Saltney. 1866 Agnes Mather 1868 Alfred Mather Alfred married Elizabeth Ann.  She died and is buried with Alfred's parents at Mold.

In 1909, Alfred married Nellie Prince (nee Quest).  They had 3 children. 1869 Louisa Mather In 1895, Louisa married Henry Hughes in Flintshire. 1872 - 1947 Annie Mather 75 75 Annie married Ethelbert Evan Alexander Barnett (1872–1872) 1873 - 1909 Charles Mather 36 36 Charles married Emily Stephensat Hollywell 1863 Walter Mather 1867 - 1867 Jane Mather 1871 Charles Mather In 1887, Charles was 6 when his mother died, and was then brought up by his aunt Sophia Isherwood. After his aunt died, he continued to live with his cousins.

In 1881, Charles (9) was living with his aunt and uncle Henry and Sophia Isherwood.

In 1891, Charles (20, nephew) was at 300 Victoria Terrace with his aunt Sophia Isherwood (62, Wid) and cousins.

In 1901, Charles Mather (29) was living with his cousins Alice and Esther Isherwood at 790 Bury Road, Tonge. 1854 Alice Ann Roscoe 1856 Albert Roscoe 1860 Walter Roscoe 1866 Elizabeth Roscoe 1872 James Thomas Roscoe 1866 - 1920 Joseph Booth 53 53 1832 - 1872 George Mather 40 40 26 May 1855, George Mather an engineer, son of James Mather a Tin Plate Worker married Sarah Aston, both from Pennybell, Flintshire.

Between 1856 and 1873, all the children's births were registered in Mold.

In 1871, George and Sarah "Mathers" (39 & 35) were with Margaret Ellen (13), Mary (10), Thomas (9), Sarah (6), George (4), Alfred (2) and Agnes (1).

George died in 1872, and in 1881 widow Sarah Mather (44) was head in Little Bolton with Margaret E (24), Mary (22), Sarah (16), George (15), Alfred (12), Agnes (11) and James (8).

In 1881, George, Engine Driver, was deceased when daughter Margaret Ellen married. 1836 - 1920 Sarah Aston 84 84 George died in 1872, and in 1881 widow Sarah Mather (44) was head at 16 Burton Court, Little Bolton with Margaret E (24), Mary (22), Sarah (16), George (15), Alfred (12), Agnes (11) and James (8).

After George died, Sarah and family moved to Little Bolton, where he children married.

In 1901, Sarah (63) was with spinster daughter Sarah (36) and son Alfred (32)

In 1911, Sarah was living with her daughter Agnes Wilson and family (including her granddaughter Helina (17) 1856 Margaret Ellen Mather April 1881, Margaret E Mather (24), born Mold was with her mother and siblings at 16 Burton Court, Little Bolton

James Mather died in Little Bolton in 1909, aged 36 1860 William Gornall William's father was Michael Gornall, (deceased when married), a Smith.
 1865 - 1931 Ann Crook Mather 66 66 In 1880, Ann was baptised at Millbrook St James, Cheshire. She was about 15 years old.

In 1881, Ann Mather (16, niece), born Turton, Lancashire was with her uncle and aunt Georeg and Ann Kay. Her father Charles was a Railway Points Man at Droylsden and mother Betty had died in 1877.

NOTE: It is not likely for Ann to be a niece of George Kay and Ann Rhodes.  She must be a niece or great niece of George's mother Nancy Kay nee Mather.

In 1901, Ann (23) was living with her older sister Mary (43) and brother Joseph (42) at Droylsden, Lancashire.

In 1902, Ann Crooke Mather married John Horrocks Bentley (1871-1929), a farmer. They had no children.

In 1911, John and Ann Bentley (39 & 45) were at Holden Farm, Egerton with sister Mary (53) and brother Joseph (52)

In 1921, Ann Crook Bintley (63) and her husband John Horrocks Bintley were farmers at Bolton with her Brother Joseph Mather (63, Cow Man) and John's cousin Rachel Howarth (85). They also had a servant William Green (54, Horse man) 1869 - 1961 Susannah Morris 91 91 Daughter of James and Lavina Morris.

Susannah Wainwright died 1 Feb 1961 and was buried with Daniel and his brother Joseph Mather at Droylsden on the 9th Feb. 1892 Sarah Alice Mather 1894 Elsie Mather 1902 Harry Mather The baptism record shows Harry was born 27 Jun 1902.  In 1939, The same Harry (DOB) was a Police inspector married to Annie (Kane).

In 1921, Harry (b.1902) and Edward (b.1906) were with parents Daniel and Susannah at Droylsden, Ashton-under-Lyne

In 1930, Harry may have married Annie Kane at Chorlton (civil marriage) and had a daughter Dorothy in 1931 (TBC). However, Dorothy is not with her parents in 1939.

In 1931, as well as the birth of daughter Dorothy there were 5 other Mather births registered at Didsbury, so Mather was a common family name here.

 1906 Edward Mather Edward was the only child not baptised.  He was aged 4 in 1911.

In early 1851 Dan left England with his children Betsy, John and Alice for America on the ship "Ellen". His wife stayed behind in Turton.  The "Ellen" sailed from Liverpool on 8 January 1851, arriving in New Orleans on 14 March 1851.  At some point the family became attached to the Mormon community.

They arrived at Kanesville and stayed there over a year because there was no room in the Mormon companies leaving for Salt Lake.

After working all winter, Daniel was told again there was no room for him. He felt badly let down and disappointed. He seemed to have no life left for anything and in the month of July (1852) he got sick and died. 1871 - 1929 John Horrocks Bentley 58 58 NOTE: Sometmes indexed as Bintley, but Bentley when John H and Ann C died.
