Mary's father was James Buist and her mother was Catherine Ramsay. She had a brother and four sisters, named James, Jane, Jessie, Williamina and Betsy.  She was the oldest of the six children. She had four half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Richard, John, George, David, Annie and Magdaline.  She died at the age of 64 on January 28th, 1951 in Dundee.²
