George was born in 1909 in Forfar.1  George's father was James Buist and his mother was Isabella Farquharson  Mearns. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Richard, John, David, Annie and Magdaline.  He was the second youngest of the six known children. He had a half-brother and five half-sisters, named James, Mary, Jane, Jessie, Williamina and Betsy.
