James' father was James Buist and his mother was Catherine Ramsay. He had five sisters named Mary, Jane, Jessie, Williamina and Betsy. He was the second oldest of the six children. He had four half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Richard, John, George, David, Annie and Magdaline. He died at the age of 68 on April 13th, 1957 in Govan.¹
