Relative of: Esther is William's mother 1835 - 1917 Esther Eddowes 82 82 Esther Eddowes was born about 1835 and baptised 17 April 1836.  She is my 2x great grandmother.

In 1851, Esther aged 15 born Holt, was with her parents John and Mary and siblings Edmund and John.

On 24 Oct 1853, Esther Eddowes married Richared Brereton at Brymbo, Wrexham.  Esther was aged 18 and Richard 19.

Brearton was spelt "Braeton" in 1861 census.  Esther and her son John were born at Common Wood, Wrexham (1871 census) by Gresfoird.

Living at 18 George St., Birkenhead in 1871 and 1881, with several boarders including George Eddowes living with them.

On 24 Oug 1878 Esther was in the news. She and her niece Martha Eddowes were summonsed for assault on Ann Baker, Martha's sister.

In 1891, Richard and Esther were at the Shropshire Inn, New Road.

Esther Brereton was listed in the 1906 Kelly's Directory: At 11 Willaston Pl, Birkenhead - Bird-in-Hand P.H., although it was actually 11 Chapel Street.

After Esther's husband, Richard dIed, Esther sold the pub (the Bird in Hand) and bought a house, 56 Church Street.

Esther died in 1917 and left a Will, leaving her house and most of her estate to her daughter Anne Hale (see reference for a transcript of the Will).

In 1851, William was 8, living at the Beast Market, Wrexham with parents John and Mary and 6 siblings.

In 1861, boarding with mother Mary and Richard and Esther Brereton and family.
1845 - 1911 Elizabeth Shortreid 66 66 Maiden name SHORTREID (on children's birth recordds)

Elizabeth and William had Esther, Jennet and William with them in 1881 at 30 Chapel Street, Birkenhead.

Elizabeth was living with her sons John and William in 1901

She died in 1911, leaving a will.
1868 - 1926 Esther Eddowes 57 57 Esther's birth was recorded Q3 1868 in Birkenhead, yet on the 1871 census she is shown as 9 months.  There are no other nirths recorded, so perhaps 9 months should by 29.

18 May 1896, Thomas and Esther were living at Latimer Street when they married.

In 1901 living with Thomas and family in Birkenhead.  Esther was left £100 in the will of her mother Elizabeth Eddowes in 1911.

In 1903 and 1908, Esther Price had two other children that died. Birth records confirm the mother as EDDOWES. They were not shown on the 1911 census (as children that had died).

In 1911, Thomas a dock labourer and Esther (45 & 39) had been married 17 years and had 3 children.
1872 - 1901 Janet (Jennet) Eddowes 29 29 Left home by 1901 1876 - 1931 William Eddowes 55 55 William was left £100 in the will of his mother Elizabeth Eddowes in 1911.

In Nov 1910, Agnes, Jessie, Esther, William and John were amongest the hundreds of mourners who attended their sister Lilian's funeral at Flaybrick Hill Cemetery.

In 1911, William (38) was single, at 61 Dale Street, Birkenhead. He was the manager of the cinema (Cinematography Show) and had his mother Elizabeth (68, Widow), brother John (36, single) and Sister Esthers three children with him.
1879 - 1961 John Eddowes 81 81 John was born late 1879.

John was left £100 in the Will of his mother Elizabeth Eddowes in 1911.

In Nov 1910, Agnes, Jessie, Esther, William and John were amongest the hundreds of mourners who attended their sister Lilian's funeral at Flaybrick Hill Cemetery.

In 1911, John (36 and single) was living with his brother William (also single).  The John and Catherine (both 50, married in 1907) are another family.

In 1939, John was single, working in Ellesmere Port, Wirral, a Labourer at the Munition Works.  DOB 15 Nov 1879 (the only possible match).
1869 George Bevan Lewis George was living with Reginald and Alice Lewis in 1911 in Birkenhead.  Janet was not present. 1882 - 1910 Lillian Eddowes 28 28 In 1901, Lillian was living with Richard and Esther at the Bird in Hand, Birkenhead.

Each of Lillians children alive in 1911 were left £20 in trust, in the will of here mother Elizabeth Eddowes in 1911.

In Nov 1910, Lillian Eddowes, aged 29 died, killed after a house fire at her home at 4 Wood Street, Birkenhead.  The fire was on the 17th Nov, and Lillian died at Birkenhead Burough Hospital two days later.

Lillian and John Francis's four children were sent to St. Vincent's, a Poor Law School in Fulwood, Preston, and were subsequently split up. How sad!
1880 - 1943 John Francis Cross 63 63 in 1901, Johns father was recorded as Born "Antwerp, (Belgium), Foreign Subject"

In 1911, John F Cross (3) was a Widower, living at 10 Neptune Street, Birkenhead with his 4 children and Albert and Alice Slater (65 & 59).  John was described as a "Nephew" and his children as g-nephew.
1900 Annie Helena Lewis ~1866 Thomas Prince In 1891, Thomas was single, a lodger, a dock labourer from Ireland.

In 1896, Thomas married Esther Edowes.

The 1901 census shows Thomas may have had a son Thomas (aged 12) from an earlier marriage. He was away in the military.  William is 3 and Esther 9 months.

In 1903 and 1908, Thomas had two other children that died. Birth records confirm the mother as EDDOWES. They were not shown on the 1911 census (as children that had died).

In 1911, Thomas a dock labourer and Esther (45 & 39) had been married 17 years and had 3 children.  The three  children were living with their uncle William and grandmother Elizabeth Eddowes.

1859 - 1918 James Henry Hart 59 59 James and Agnes had 2 children, but one died an infant (before 1911) 1902 - 1976 John Albert Cross 73 73 After his mother died, John, Mary, Willian and James were sent to St. Vincent's, a Poor Law School in Fulwood, Preston.

John, the oldest stayed in Liverpool, working as a dock labourer.  His three younger siblings, were sent to Canada as "British Home Child" through the Catholic Emigrating Association. 
1905 - 1959 Mary Alice Cross 54 54 After her mother died, John, Mary, Willian and James were sent to St. Vincent's, a Poor Law School in Fulwood, Preston. Mary was then sent to Canada as "British Home Child" through the Catholic Emigrating Association.

Mary stayed in Canada, where she worked as a domestic for a farmer North of Ottawa. She eventually married a man from Ottawa and died there in 1959.
1908 - 1926 William James Cross 18 18 With no mother to look after them, John, Mary, Willian and James were sent to St. Vincent's, a Poor Law School in Fulwood, Preston, and subsequently all except John sent to Canada as "British Home Child" through the Catholic Emigrating Association.

In about 1924, William joined the merchant marine and just two years later, in Oct 1926, died from drowning when he fell into the cold waters of the Montreal harbour while hanging below a ship, painting it.

1910 - 2010 James Henry Cross 99 99 In April 1911, James was 7 months and his father and siblings were living with his uncle Albert and Alice Slater in Birkenhead. His mother had been killed the previous year.  His uncle James was Prussian (i.e. German).

With no mother to look after them, John, Mary, Willian and James were sent to St. Vincent's, a Poor Law School in Fulwood, Preston, and subsequently all except John sent to Canada as "British Home Child" through the Catholic Emigrating Association.

Sometime after 1926, William returned to live in England. In 1944, James married Margaret J Mather in Manchester.

James Cross and Margaret married they emigrated back to Ontario, Canada.
1865 - 1943 Jessie Eddowes 78 78 1939 register had Jessie's DOB as 15 Sep 1866 (not 1865) so this could be an ERROR in the tree.

In 1944, Margaret J Mather married James Cross (from my Brereton family tree) at Manchester.
1904 - 1904 Charles Francis Cross 1846 - 1917 Albert Slater 71 71 Albert was from Prussia (i.e. Germany).

In 1881, Albert and Alice (35 & 28) were at Eldon Street, Birkenhead. Robert and Maggie Williams were visitors.

In 1891, Albert and Alice (45 & 36) were at 12 Loon(?) Street, Argyle, Birkenhead.  Albert was a Ship's Rigger.  They had their daughter Minnie (5) with them and two servants.

In 1901, Albert and Alice are missing.

In 1911, Albert and Alice (65 & 59) were living at Neptune Street, Birkenhead. In the Gore Direcctory, Albert, a Rigger, is listed at 270 Price Street, Birkenhead.
1852 - 1931 Alice Slater 79 79 In 1911, Alice Slater was 59, living at 10 Neptune Street, Birkenhead with son Albert (19) and the John Cross family. 1892 Albert Slater 1886 Minnie Slater 1903 - 1904 Samuel Prince 1 1 1908 - 1908 Sarah Ann Prince 3m 3m 1889 - 1957 Thomas Prince 67 67 Although later living in Birkenhead, Tom's birth was registered in Neston (as well as 3 other Prince births 1888-93).

Thomas may be an illegitimate or adopted child from another partner.  He was born 7 years before his parents married.
