Elizabeth's father was William Humphreys and her mother was Elizabeth Eddowes. Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Eddowes and Mary Ann Hughes. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Richard, James, Arthur, Harry, William, Mary, Catherine and Florence. She was the seventh oldest of the nine children.
