James' father was William Humphreys and his mother was Elizabeth Eddowes. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Eddowes and Mary Ann Hughes. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Richard, Arthur, Harry, William, Mary, Catherine, Elizabeth and Florence. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
