William's father was George Eddowes and his mother was Nellie Weeden. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Eddowes and Mary Ann Hughes; his maternal grandparents were George Henry Weeden and Sarah Ann Breakwell. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Frederick, Thomas, Robert, James, Nellie and Elsie. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 67 in December 1973 in Leigh.²
