Work with: Jacob Lomax, Abraham Lomax and Isaac Lomax were partners, manufacturing quilts at Little Bolton and Manchester under the name "Jacob Lomax and Sons" Neighbor: Peter Mather (46) and Joshua Twist (Wid, 65) were neighbours in Sharples in 1891 1768 - 1843 Happy Lomax 75 75 NOTE: There was another Happy Lomax (1786-1799) of Breightmet, buried at Cockey.  This may Happy's illegitimate daughter.

In 1790, Happy was about 22 when she married James Mather at St Peter's, Bolton.

When aged about 43, Happy was on the 1811 Little Bolton Poor List, living at Blackburn Street.  This was the year that her husband James Mather died.  Her grandson John (and Ellen nee Buckley) were living in Blackburn Street in 1841.

Happy married 3 times, but with such a unique name, she is easy to trace.  She is described as a spinster for each marriage, although she is clearly a widower for the second and third.  Her granddaughter and several other realtives were also named Happy.

17 Nov 1816, Happy Mather married Joseph Baron.  Their  witness Henry Butterworth was probably the son of John and Alice (and of a similar age to the couple) also from Little Bolton

In 1841, Happy Cheeetham (70) was living with Ann Boardman (75), in the Alms House, Little Bolton, an OAP's home for widows and spinsters, and there were 11 old women in the same residence.

The death certificate doesn't give any clues of her previous marriages, except to tell us that William Cheetham was a weaver.

25 Jun 1843, Happy Cheetham was buried at the Wesleyan Methodist, Bolton with her son Samuel Mather (who died in 1854).
 1735 - 1831 James Lomax 96 96 James married Hannah about 1750 and had a daughter Mary buried at Breightmet 21 Feb 1753.  They then had another Daughter Elizabeth in 1756 before Hannah died shortly after.

27 May 1760, James Lomax (widower, born in Deane in 1735) then maried Mary Taylor (widow nee Bromiley).  All their children where christened at Bank Street Unitarian (Bury), distinguishing them from the other famileys. 

Another James Lomax (born in Bolton about 1734) married Mary Crompton in 1759.  Their children were recorded for Bolton Le Moors, with Mary Compton named as spouse.

Another James Lomas (born in Bolton about 1735) married Sarah Kershaw on 17-Nov-1760.

James Lomax was witness to Richard Mather and Ann Howarth's marriage 1761.  Their son James Mather went on to Marry James's daughter Happy Lomax.

Sunday School work in Edgworth started in cottages, one being at the Nursery at Greenthorne, the Barlows also ran a dame school. In 1802 there was a Sunday School at Tarkington run by two elderly men, James Lomas and Thomas Holt. To accommodate all the people it was held in the morning and the afternoon. 1739 - 1764 Mary Nelson 25 25 A Mary Bromily of Bolton Parish married Thos Greenhalgh of Bury parish on 6-Jan-1765, in Bolton Parish Church, so were there two Mary Bromilies?

A ancestry.co.uk family tree member tree also shows James married to Mary Jackson.

Another James Lomax of Bolton was married to Mary Crompton 6-Nov-1759, and had a daughter Alice christened 2-Apr-1775 1761 - 1761 Mary Lomax 23d 23d ~1735 Ann Haslam 1756 Elizabeth Lomax Elizabeth may have married Henry Cooke, 26 Nov 1766 at Deane. 1732 - 1766 Miles Bromiley 34 34 Miles was already widowed when he married Mary Nelson in 1757.  Miles died in 1766.

Therefore most probably is Entwistle, bnut could be wrong. 1774 Mary Lomax 1780 Thomas Lomax 1782 Mary Lomax 1776 William Lomax 1772 Anne Lomax 1779 Alice Lomax 1751 Betty Lomax Seems to be born too late to be daughter of this Ellen.  Also, the IGI index record can no longer be found, but that is a common problem for many records ince FamilySearch updated their website. 1759 Mary Bromiley Mary Bromiley was witness at John Mathers marriage to Elizabeth Kay.  If it's the same person (i.e. John's Great Aunt), she would have been 82 in 1843. 1810 John Green 1780 - 1866 James Flitcroft 86 86 James was the son or Robert Flitcrodt and Margaret Taylor 1780 - 1854 Mary Cartwright 74 74 Mary was the daughter of Thomas Cartwright and Betty Hulton 1820 Hannah Flitcroft 1808 Sarah Flitcroft 1814 Thomas Flitcroft 1806 John Flitcroft 1809 - 1830 Mary Ann Flitcroft 21 21 In 1851, Mary Ann Flitcroft also had a civil marriage to Peter Millington.  That was another Mary Ann from Hyde, b.1836 1816 James Flitcroft 1823 Ellen Flitcroft 1818 - 1880 Happy Flitcroft 61 61 This is the only other "Happy" of Bolton, so may be related to Happy Lomax, but no link found.

John Green was from Westhoughton.

In 1852, Happy Flitcroft married John Green at Bolton RO so may have been bacause it was John's second marriage, or more likely Happy was a baptist.  John had a son Noah born 1837. ~1800 James Flitcroft James's father was called Seth.  He had sons John and Seth ~1800 Mary Taylor 1820 Seth Flitcroft 1819 John Flitcroft 1826 John Flitcroft 1829 Joseph Flitcroft 1825 Samuel Flitcroft 1828 Richard Flitcroft 1832 Betty Flitcroft 1836 Elizabeth Flitcroft 1755 James Lomax 1761 Esther Lomax 1716 John Lomax ~1720 Ellen Vickers 1764 James Lomax 1730 James Lomax James and Ann of Sharples (after Elizabeth baptised in Little Bolton). 

Another James and Ann of Tong had Richard 30 Apr 1858, and John 30 May 1773 which must be another family. 1759 - ~1761 James Lomax 2 2 ~1735 - 1759 Hannah Lomax 24 24 James and Ann Haslam is another familiy (from Sharples, Bolton).  This Ann had several children between 1756 and 1776 with another James Lomax,. 1756 Margaret Lomax Possible John Howson 9 cM DNA connection (but not LOMAX) to HMG
 1758 - 1758 Alice Lomax 1766 Sarah Lomax 1768 Alice Lomax 1776 Richard Lomax There is a Richard and Esther Lomas family from Harwood (with Betty born 1811), but no matching Lancashire marriage. ~1731 - 1796 Mary Taylor 65 65 Mary was a widower when she married James Lomax in 1760.

Daniel Bromiley of Halliwell was buried at Bolton 7 Jun 1758. Was she married to him?  Well no records for a marriage of childrens christenings.

Her previous marriage was NOT to Miles Bromiley, as his wife Mary was buried Bolton 5 June 1764, nor to John Bromley as his wife Mary was buried Leigh 14 Dec 1756. Jane or Elizabeth Markland or Wright 1786 - 1786 Elizabeth Lomax 10m 10m ~1729 - 1757 Arthur Bromiley 28 28 Based on Dean marriages; Then possibly Arthur Bromiley (who married Mary Tailor 1749).  There are no other possible Deane marriages of a Bromiley to a Mary.

There is also a burial record for Arthur (of Halliwell) 3 years before Mary remarried in Deane to James Lomax of Bolton, so this is a very good match. 1765 John Lomax Marriage to Margaret Andrews in 1787 is a likely candidate (as aged 22).  John and Esther Entwistle in 1874 by license is too early (although possible DNA 12cM DNA link with Annaleise Nicholls)

Marriage to Jane Watson in 1791 is very possible, as children baptised at Ridgway Gates Wesleyan, which would tie in with sister Happy Lomax's children.

He may have marrried a Betty.  John and Betty Chadwick were married in 1789 and alive in Bolton in 1841, but could easily be another as John Lomax is a common name in these times.   1770 John Lomax 1772 John Lomax 1774 - 1792 John Lomax 17 17 1837 - 1893 James Mather 56 56 James, son of James from Bolton.

In 1851, James was living with his sister Susannah.

In 1861, James Mather (23) was a boarder, a warehouseman, with James and Sarah Sharrocks at 55 Soho Street, Eastern Bolton.

22 Sep 1867, James Mather (29), a Book Keeper of Reddish, Stockport, son of James Mather (dec) a Spinner married Mary Flitcroft (24) a Weaver from Sidney St. Bolton daughter of Ellis Flitcroft (dec) a Bricklayer at Park Street Wesleyan Methodist, Bolton. 

In 1871, James a Bookkeeper and Mary (33 & 27, both born Bolton) were at Reddish Lane, Reddish, Stockport with Mary Jane Mather (3)

7 July 1878, James, an operative, and Mary had all their surviving children (except for Mary Jane) baptised at Reddish, St Elisabeth. They were living at 11 John Street, Reddish.

In 1881, James a Bookkeeper and Mary (43 & 37, both born Bolton) were at 10 Hannah Street, Reddish, Stockport with Mary Jane Mather (13), James Henry (11), Kate (10) Isabel (6) and Jessie (1)
1751 Ann Bromiley ~1755 - 1799 Arthur Bromiley 44 44 Arthur was a weaver when he married Mary Croshaw.  There's another marriage of Arthur Bromiley to Abigal Fletcher in 1779. 1749 Esther Bromiley ~1755 Mary Croshaw Mary quoted as "she the daughter of Thomas and Ellen Croshow of Kersley" 1779 Thomas Bromiley 1784 - 1861 Samuel Bromiley 77 77 Still at Harwood in 1861, married to Sarah. 1776 Robert Bromiley 1780 James Bromiley 1777 Ruth Bromiley 1786 - 1842 John Bromiley 56 56 1790 Roger Bromiley 1793 Daniel Bromiley 1753 Arthur Bromiley Esther and Ann were born Halliwell, and Arthur (the farther) was of Halliwell when he died, so although this Arthur is born Heaton, its still a good fit as first son named after father, and Heaton is near or part of Halliwell. 1755 - 1814 Abigail Fletcher 59 59 1779 - 1779 Arthur Bromiley 1785 - 1848 John Bromiley 63 63 1787 Daniel Bromiley 1800 - 1822 Nancy Bromiley 22 22 Nancy may have had a son Janes about one year before she died.  James, son of Nancy Mather of G.B. was buried 29 Dec 1822, aged 8 months.

Nancy Mather (1800-1822) was originally thought to be the daugher of Richard Mather and Hannah Knowles. However once it was realised that Nathaniel is also from Harwood and their oldest son, then Nancy is clearly his first wife.

Nathaniel and Nancy had a son John in Nov 1822, but Nancy died during or soon after giving birth.  John died 9 months later.  They are buried together at Bradshaw Chapel. 1753 - 1753 Mary Lomax Mary daughter of James and Hannah Lomax of Breightmet was buried 21 Feb 1753
 1770 - 1851 Alice Lomax 81 81 Another Alice Lomax of Bolton, daughter of James Lomax and Mary Crompton was christened 2 Apr 1775.  This other Alice married John Booth on 25 Aug 1790.

Alice was on the Little Bolton poor list in 1811 (but not 1831), living in Green Street. She would have only been 41, so this may be another.

In 1851 she was Head of household, aged 80, proprietor of land at Silverwell St, Great Bolton 1773 - 1846 Arthur Bromiley 73 73 Probably son of Arthur Bromiley and Mary (unconfirmed but likely as both Arthur families lived in Harwood).

In 1841, Arthur and Ellen are still alive (68 & 65) at Harwood with John (35) and Esther (25) 1776 Ellen Entwistle 1810 Samuel Bromiley 1802 James Bromiley 1806 John Bromiley 1816 Esther Bromiley Either a daughter of Arthur or old enough to be John's wife. 1773 Alice Lomax This is another Alice Lomax, daughter of James and Ann.  However, it appears this is a different James, and he didnt remarry Ann (Abbott) 1847 - 1915 Peter Mather 68 68 in 1875, the family were in Boston, MA when John was born, but had returned to Bolton by 1876.

In 1861 Nancy and Peter (17 and 15) are with their uncle Thomas Moore in Sharples..

In 1871, Peter (22, Unmarried) is a boarder, a piecer at the cotton mill.

About April 1874, Peter married Ann Crompton at Bolton.  Then in 1874, Peter a labourer and Ann Mather (28 & 30) travelled from Liverpool to New York on the ship Idaho, possibly for their honeymoon, although they appear to have stayed a few years.  They arrived on 6 July after an approx   six week crossing.

In 1876, Peter's son John was born in Boston, MA.

In 1881, Peter and Ann (36 & 40) are at 27 Rowland Street, Astley Bridge (Little Bolton Higher End) with John (5) and Mary (4).

In 1891, Peter and Ann (46 & 50) were at 7 Back Taylor Street, Astley Bridge, Sharples with John (15) and Mary (14).  Peter was an outdoor labourer.

In 1909, Peter Mather (56, a labourer and single) from Bolton travelled from Liverpool to Boston to visit John in Massachusetts.
 1804 Betty Flitcroft ~1770 James Flitcroft ~1770 Mary Lowe 1802 Thomas Lowe Flitcroft 1792 Margaret Flitcroft 1790 - 1791 Betty Flitcroft 1 1 1762 Jane (Jenny) Lomax 8 Sep 1784, Jane (signed Jeny) Lomax married Richard Orrell 1790 - 1799 Betty Lomax 8 8 Betty was born Jan 1790 (and died in 1799).  It appears her mother Betty Lomax may have died in Childbrith, although Betty died 14 Jan. ~1750 James Lomax 6 Jan 1775, James was a widower when he married Betty Twiss (or Twist) ~1750 - 1823 Betty Twist 73 73 1785 Alice Lomax 1781 Betty Lomax Betty was born at Nab Moor James Lomax Mary Hornby 1783 Thomas Lomax 1775 Betty Lomax ~1725 - 1772 Ruth Brooks 47 47 Who was James's first wife?  Possibly Lydia as James and Lydia had a daughter Elizabeth baptised 12 May 1770. However another wife Betty is more likely.  James and Betty had a daughter Betty in 1764 that died in 1774, aged 9.  Then James and his new wife Betty Twist had a replacement Betty the following year.

A third option is Ruth.  Ruth, W of James Lomax of Harwood was buried June 1772. However the only Ruth is Routh Brooks who married James Lomax in 1745 1787 Esther Lomax Esther was born at Harwood 1764 - 1774 Betty Lomax 10 10 Robert Lomax Mary Kay 1784 Ann Lomax 1785 Ellen Lomax 1750 - 1798 Joseph Lomax 48 48 James and Betty lived at Breightmet Hill (shown on Molly and John's baptism).  Later records only show Breightmet.  They used Ainsworth Chapel, Cockey Moor Presbyterian. 1753 - 1801 Betty Haslam 48 48 1792 - 1799 Joseph Lomax 7 7 1784 - 1854 Jacob Lomax 70 70 There is another Jacob Lomax (son of Jacob) born 6 Dec 1786 at Bury (and died 1851, aged 65). Both were alive aged 55 in 1841, one at Crook St, W Bolton, the other married to Alice with family at Folds Road, Little Bolton.

In 1843, Jacob Lomax, a Manufacturer of full age and a widower of Little Bolton, son of Joseph Lomax a weaver married Mary Holems.

1 Jan 1851, the partnership between Jacob, senior partner in "Jacob Lomax and Sons", quilt manufacturers in Little Bolton and Manchester and his sons Abraham and Isaac expired.

This Jacob died Westhoughton 1854, aged 69 (although the 1851 death is also possible but fits the other Jacob better) 1794 Milly (Amelia) Lomax Amelia Lomax married John Kirkman

In 1861, Amelia lived in Harwood with her son Robert and family 1782 Abraham Lomax 1775 - 1839 John Lomax 64 64 1772 Molly Lomax 1774 - 1774 Hannah Lomax 1780 Hannah Lomax 1786 - 1799 Happy Lomax 13 13 Happy Lomax died Nov 1799, aged 13 so was born about 1786.  There is no baptism for Happy and all we know for sure is she is from Breightmet and probably daughter of Joseph and Betty (all buried together at Breightmet).
