John was born on February 22nd, 1770 in Bolton and his christening took place on March 14th, 1770 at Bank Street Unitarian.1  John's father was Abraham Lomax and his mother was Betty Hamer. He had a brother and three sisters, named Abraham, Mary, Betty and Anne.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.
