John was born in 1796 in Bolton and his baptism took place on March 3rd, 1796 at Ridgway Gates Wesleyan conducted by Chris Hopper.1  John's father was John Lomax and his mother was Jane Watson.  His paternal grandparents were James Lomax and Mary Taylor. He had two brothers and two sisters, named William, Mary, Maria and Eliza.  He was the second oldest of the five children. He had two half-sisters named Ann and Sarah.
