Richard, a shoemaker, married Ellen Lea in Liverpool in 1826. In 1841 he is at Harthill, 38 (indexed as 30) and still a "shoem", or shoemaker or cordwainder to 1861.
In 1851 he 49, a cordwainer
Richard married twice. The census records show him on the same 9 acre farm in 1871 and 1881, first with Ellen and then Sarah.
Richard died 18 Feb 1883 and left a will, which is available ton-line. See copy attached. He left the farm to Martha. He had 6 surviving children at the time he wrote his will.

74
Left home by 1891 and boarding in All Saints, Herefordshire.
28 Oct 1903, William Brereton (32), Station Master, living at Park Gate, son of John Brereton, farmer married Annie Bethall (34) a spinster of Little Sutton at Hooton St Paul. Thomas Brereton was a witness.
In 1925, William's mother left her estate to William. He was a stationmaster
1810 - 1893
George
Brereton
83
83
George is one of my 8 Great Great Great (4X) Grandfathers. George was born at Burwardsley (Farm), about one mile from Harthill.
When George and Jane were married, thier parents were witness to the marriage. George was of Harthill Parish, and Jane from Shocklach.
Acout 1848, George moved from Tilston to Cuddington Mill. Jane and Thomazs were born at Cuddington.
In 1850 George, Jane Brereton and family are living at Cuddington Mill, where son Thomas was born.
In 1851, George (41, a Miller and Farmer of 48 acres) and Jane (41) are at Cuddington Mill with the family; Richard (16), William (14), Robert (12), John (7), Charles (5), Jane (3) and Thomas (8mo). Ann Clutton (19) was their house servant.
In 1853, when George's son Richard married Esther Eddowes, George was a Publican.
In 1861, George and Jane (52 & 53) were farmers of 20 acres and employed one man.
About 1865, the family moved to Birkenhead, working as a Porter. His wife Jane died in Birkenhead in 1867 and in 1869 George re-married Martha Holt (widow, aged 48). He was 59 but put down 55 on his marriage record
In 1871, George, a porter, and Martha (56 & 48) were living at 8 Neptune Street, Birkenhead. Two of Marthas children (George's step-children) were with them.
In 1891, George was living with son Robert Brereton in Birkenhead.
After Jane died, George married Martha Holt, 12 years his junior. They were in Birkenhead in 1881.
Dont confuse with other George Breretons born about 1809 and 1815 who married Martha Hildich in 1859. Also his uncle Thomas had a son George, born 1811 (i.e. cousin).
Ann recorded George as born in 1806, so it is possible we have the wrong George, but unlikely as good links with son and family.
Unlike older brothers John and Thomas, William and George did not make a Will.
1801 - 1851
Hannah
Warburton
50
50
Hannah maried William when she was 37, so the two servant girls (Anne and Elizabeth Warburton) living with her in 1851 are most probably her daughters from an earler marriage.
The Chester Chronicle of 8/2/1829 reports: "16th ion at Malpas, Mr William Brereton, jnr of Harthill, to Miss Warburton, of Bickerton, in this county".
The only listed deaths of possible husbands is Peter, although his death (Q4-38) seems too close to her next marriage (Q1-39) to be right.
1826
Anne
Warburton
1840 - 1885
Samuel
Brereton
44
44
If Samuel was William's son then his father was 65 when he was concieved. However, Samuel is probably an illegitimate grandson as there is no Samule Brereton birth recorded.
In 1841, Samuel, aged 3 months, is listed under Wiliam Brereton Jnr. It is therefore likely he is an illegitimate son of William Jnr before William married Mary Bate.
in 1851, Samule, aged 10, is at Woodend Farm and described as the son of William and Hannah (75 & 49), so it is possible he is their son (but listed out of order in 1841), but more likely an adopted grandson. Hannah died in August.
In 1861, Samule (20), now a draper, is still living with his "father" William Brereton (86) at 100 acre Woodend Farm. His brother Thomas and extended family were living with them, and probably running the farrm.

Jane Bebbington (Mother in Law, b.1814) was living with Samuel and Ellen in 1871
In 1891, Ellen (45, Widow) is a farmer at Over with her children John (19), Annie (17), Samuel (15), Arthur (13), George (11), Christopher (11), and Helen (7).
Ellen and her family cannot be found in 1901. She was aged 67 and with son Samuel (34) at Church Minshull, Middlewich in 1911.
1869
Ernest
Brereton
There is another Earnest Brereton, son of Edwin and Mary Ann born 6 Aug 1865. It is this Earnest that married Mary Shawn Glegg in 1887 (aged 45 & 43 in 1911).
In 1871, William, John and Ernest (5, 3 & 1) were with their parents at Over, Cheshire.
In 1881, William, John, Ernest, and Frank (15, 13, 11, 9) and four others were with their parents and grandmother Jane Bebbington (67) at Manor House Farm, Swanlow Lane, Winsford, Cheshire.
In 1891, Frank was not with the fsmily at Over.

Samuel Brereton (b.1832), a Grocer, wife Annie (b.1931) were living in Church Minshull Village in 1871, so we may have the wrong family here (although different address).

Unlike older brothers John and Thomas, William and George did not make a Will.
In 1841, William (30) was still with his parents at Harthill, and with (assumed) son Samule (3 mo)
In 1851, Pheobe Tomlinson was a boarder at Fullers moor.
In 1861, William Brereton (53) and Mary (50) were at Fullers Moor (9 acres), with son Roger (16) and niece Emma Clarke (17). In 1863 they were still there. The niece must be on Mary's side of the family.
In 1881, William and Mary Brereton (74 & 70) were at Dutton Cacca with their son Roger (36, unmarried). William was a retired farmer and local Methodist preacher.
1803 - 1872
Thomas
Brereton
68
68
22 Jan 1827, Thomas Broughton (Brereton), Blacksmith married Martha Hughes at St Oswald's, Chester.
From census records it appears that Thomas didn't have his own farms. His sons George and Edward worked for his brother William nearby in Broxton.
In 1841, Thomas and Martha are farming at Bronington, with all children present except for John who was helping at his grandparents.
"The Australian Brereton book describes Thomas Brereton as "of Brown Knowl", which is where he is recorded in 1851.
Samuel Hughes.Martha's brother set off for Australia with Thomas's three sons John, George & William Brereton. From there it goes from William & Sarah then to Ernest & Annie and then to Don & Ruby then Don & Val and to Richard's siblings brother Don and sisters Debbie and Shelley who all have children. (Extracted from the www).
Some of this information, believed to originate from a book are incorrect. Thomas and Martha's sons William and John came to Australia in 1852 and their other sons George and Thomas arrived in 1858.
Thomas and Martha, married in Chester in 1827, but the name is miss-spelt, so the record was difficult to find.
Appears to have stayed in the UK after his father had ded, as father William BRERETON was living with them at Woodend farm till 1866, and was still at the farm in 1871, aged 67. He probably never went to Australia.
Thomas left £50 advance each to Edward, Jane and Sarah. Later his estate was to be sold and divided equally to all 10 children after his wife Martha died.
1801 - 1870
John
Brereton
69
69
17 Aug 1829, John Broughton, butcher, married Elizabeth Boot at St John the Baptist, Chester, Cheshire, His younger brother George was a witness.
In 1831, John was a butcher. Later, John was a farmer of 124 acres, and an employer of 2 labourers. He lived with his wife's parents throughout his married life.
In 1841, John and Elizabeth (both 35) were with Elizabeth's parents William and Ann Boote. Their three surviving children John, Thos and William (5, 2 and 1mo) were also with them.
In 1851, John (47), Elizabeth (46) and family, including Ann (2) were living with John's parents William and Ann Boote
According to their headstone (and John's will), John and Elizabeth lived at Bolesworth Hill, Broxton (as tenant farmers). John must have been very sucessful, leaving an estate valued at under £1,500 (in 1870).
1775 - 1866
William
Brereton
Jnr
91
91
William is one of my 16 Great Great Great Great (5x) Grandfathers. William Jnr was a farmer, like his father William before him.
20 Jul 1800, William Bruarton (i.e. Brereton) of the Parish of Hanley (i.e. Handley) and Mary Tomlinson of Broxton in this parish [of Malpas] were married in this church by licence. Handley is about 3 miles North of Broxton.
In 1839, After William was Widowed, (1834) he maried Hannah Warburton at the Malpas Parish Church.
In 1834 William Brereton was Church Warden of Harthill, and signed the page with Mary's burial on it. Probably this is William before he and the family became Methodists.
In 1841, William and Hannah (60 & 40), were farming at Harthill. They had William (30), Samuel (3mo) and John Brereton (14)
Thomas Brereton, son of William Lea and Jane was living in Harthill in 1841, a neighbour of William and Martha in 1841
In 1851 William (75) is married to Hannah (49) and farming 90 acres at Woodend Farm, Harthill. His son samuel (aged 10) was with them as well as Anne and Elizabeth Warburton (servants, 21 & 13), probably nieces of his young wife Hannah. William was 66 and Hannah 40 when son Samuel was born.
By 1851 it is probable he (and almost certainly his son William) was attending Brown Knowl Chapel, as William and Mary's infant son John Brerton was the first of this Brereton family to be buried there in 1851, aged only 4.
He was reported (in the newspaper) to have sold up and retired from farming, "The Dark Lane Farm, Broxton" in 1858 (aged 84), but was still recorded as a farmer on the 1861 census.
In 1861, William (86, Wid) is farming 100 acres at Woodend Farm with his son Thomas and Martha (56 & 53).
In 1866. William died, aged 92, and was buried at Brown Knowl (Methodist) with his second wife Hannah.
