Ernest's father was Samuel Brereton and his mother was Alice Evans. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Bond Brereton and Sarah Fuller. He had a brother and two sisters, named George, Florence and Elsie. He was the youngest of the four known children. He died at the age of 49 in December 1949.
