John was born in 1782 in Peckforton and his baptism took place on June 23rd, 1782 in Bunbury.1 2  John's father was William Brereton and his mother was Mary Ledsham.  His paternal grandparents were Sandford Brereton and Elizabeth Dale; his maternal grandparents were Richard Ledsham and Ann Lucas. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Richard, William, George, Thomas, James, Samuel, Abraham and Mary.  He was the sixth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 81 on December 23rd, 1863 in Staffordshire.3
