James was born in 1785 in Harthill and his christening took place there on May 15th, 1785.1  James' father was William Brereton and his mother was Mary Ledsham.  His paternal grandparents were Sandford Brereton and Elizabeth Dale; his maternal grandparents were Richard Ledsham and Ann Lucas. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Richard, William, George, Thomas, John, Samuel, Abraham and Mary.  He was the seventh oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 35 in April 1820 in Harthill.  His burial was on April 4th, 1820 at All Saints, Harthill.2 2
