Mary survived her husband by 26 years. When she died she was buried in the Shady Grove Cemetery beside her grandmother, Frances McClure, and near her step-mother-in-law, Lavinia Clement. Engraved on her tombstone is Mary Clement, Wife of Andy, with dates of birth and death. Below that is the following inscription, "A precious one from us has gone, A voice we loved is still, A place is vacant in our home, Which never can be filled, God in his wisdom has recalled, The book his love has given, And though the body now lies here, The soul is safe in heaven."

I am still researching the Noblett Family trying to find the ancestral line of Elizabeth. I am especially interested in trying to find the conncection between her family and that of her daughter-in-law, Adeline Noblett Skaggs, wife of Asa Skaggs. For the time being, I have placed her as the daughter of Joseph Noblett and a sister of William Noblett who married Margaret Barr. There is definitely a close connection between the family of William Noblett and the family of Elizabeth Noblett and Henry Skaggs. From my research it would appear that Henry Skaggs and Elizabeth moved to Missouri several years before William Noblett did, and from the records it would appear that Elizabeth (Noblett) Skaggs had already died when William Noblett and his family moved to MO. Yet, when William Noblett moved to MO, he settled very near Henry Skaggs and his children, and Henry Skaggs became the guardian of two minor children of Thomas Noblett when he died. LKCL

Adeline is listed on the 1850 Osage Co. MO Census, age 18, born in TN, living in household #71 with John and Margaret (Noblett) Bowman. Living nearby in household #68 is Henry Skaggs and his second wife, Elizabeth Momom, and Henry's son, Asa, who later married Adeline. (Henry Skaggs first wife who had died in 1834 was Elizabeth Noblett, believed to be an aunt of Adeline's father, Thomas Noblett.) Elizabeth was not named in her mother's will and this fact has caused much confusion among Noblett researchers as to whether she was actually a child of Thomas and Elizabeth. Adeline is listed on the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Maries Co. MO Census records with her husband and children. She is listed on the 1900 Maries Co. MO Census records as a widow. She is the head of the household living in Jefferson Township. Living with her is her daughter Margaret age 37, and sons Harvey age 48 and Ely T. age 34. Also inculded is the information that she is the mother of 7 children, 5 of whom are living, that she was born in TN, and that both of her parents were born in TN. She is listed on the 1910 Maries Co.MO Census records with the same three children, but Harvey is listed as the head of the household. She is listed on the 1920 Maries Co living in the household with her son-in-law Thomas H. Blackwell. Living in a seperate household are the three children with whom she had previously lived. Death Certificate #9418 shows Adaline Skaggs, birthdate not given; widowed at death. Resided at Lanes Prairie, Maries Co, MO about 92 years. Parents not listed on certificate. Died in South Jefferson Township, Lanes Prairie, Maries Co, MO on Mar. 17, 1922. Died from Bronchitis, with Chronic Nephritis. Nan Skaggs,[wife of John B. Skaggs] Lanes Prairie, MO informant on DC. Elizabeth died of Consumptiion after an illness of 120 days at the age of 36. She left her husband with 8 children ranging in age from an infant child, aged 4 months, to a daughter age 19. Elizabeth's great-grandfather was the famed Kentucky Longhunter, Henry Skaggs, about whom much has been written in Kentucky History. He was also a brother of Richard Skaggs, grandfather of William Wesley Clement, making William Wesley and Elizabeth 4th cousins. Of the five Skaggs brothers who were all Kentucky Longhunters, Elizabeth's great-grandfather, Henry, is perhaps the most famous. He kept extensive notes of his hunting trips into Kentucky, and it was his notes that helped inspire the interest of Daniel Boone to explore the Kentucky frontier. Henry Skaggs served as a guide for Daniel Boone on one of Boone's early trips into Kentucky. When Elizabeth's father, also named Henry Skaggs, and William Wesley's father, Andrew Clement, moved from Kentucky in the early 1800s, they joined a wagon train of settlers going to Missouri to settle on land granted to Daniel Boone by the government of Spain. This is the land that would later become the "Louisiana Territory". By the time the Skaggs and the Clements reached Missouri, Spain had sold the land to France and France had, in turn, sold it to the United States. Elizabeth is mentioned in her father's will, which is recorded in Osage Co. MO court records, dated 31 Mar 1855 in which he states, "Personal property has already been given to my daughter, Elizabeth Clements, now deceased."

Henry bears the name of his grandfather, the famed Kentucky Longhunter. Henry moved from Green County Kentucky to Missouri around 1816 or 1817. He is listed on the 1817 Franklin Co. MO, Gasconade Township Tax List. This area became part of Gasconade County MO in 1820, part of Crawford Co. MO in 1829, part of Osage Co. MO in 1841, and finally, part of Maries Co. in 1855 which was the year that Henry also died. He is listed in the Green County, Kentucky Deed Book, page 480, dated July 5, 1822 with the following information: "Henry (Little) Skaggs of Gasconade Co. MO makes Isaac Roberts the power-of-attorney to convey tract sold to Drury Thompson and Jesse Roberts in Green Co. KY on Pitman Creek. Also, papers and Bill of Sale from David Skaggs to me for a Negro man named Bob." He is listed on the 1830 Crawford Co. MO Census records, where he is living 7 housholds down from Andrew Clement. Andrew's wife Sarah "Sally" Skaggs, daughter of Richard Skaggs, was a first cousin of Henry's father, David. Henry's daughter, Elizabeth married Andrew Clement's son, William Wesley Clement, in Crawford Co. MO in 1829, justa few months before the 1830 Census. Henry is living in Gasconade Co. MO in 1840 even though he is not listed in on the 1840 Gasconade Co. MO Census Records. He is listed on the 1850 Osage Co. MO Census records. Henry received Land Patents in MO from three different Presidents - Martin Van Buren, John Tyler, and James Buchanan - the last of which was not completed until after his death and the land was then assigned to his heirs because the Certificate of the Register of the Land had been deposited at the Land Office and full payment for the land had been made. The first patent, Certificate No. 7055, was for 40 acres and was dated October 1, 1840; the second patent, Certificate No.11068, was also for 40 acres and was dated April 10, 1843. At the time that both of these parcels of land were granted to Henry, he was a resident of Gasconade Co. MO and the new land was located in Osage Co. MO (this part of Osage Co. later became part of Maries Co. MO. The third patent, Certificate No. 26911. was for 160 acres of land in Maries Co. MO and was dated May 2, 1859. It reads in part, "Whereas Henry Skaggs of Maries Co. MO had deposited in the General Land Office of the United States, a Certificate of the Register of the Land Office at St. Louis, whereby it appears that full payment had been made by the said Henry Skaggs...do give and grant unto the said Henry Skaggs and to his heirs the said tracts of land...". Since this date is after his death, we can only assume that the government patent was included in the estate of Henry Skaggs. Henry's name appears in the Osage Co. Probate Court Records, dated December, 1852, where the court had appointed guardians for minor children of deceased persons. The record reads as follows: Henry Scaggs, guardian of Benjamin F. and Henry C. Noblett, minor heirs of Thomas Noblett, deceased. Thomas Noblett was the nephew of Henry's first wife, Elizabeth Noblett. "Henry's will is recorded in the Maries Co. MO Court Records, Will Book, p. 12, dated 31 Mar 1855. It reads as follows: "In the name of God I Henry Skaggs of the County of Osage and State of Missouri being of sound mind and in my usual health desirous of disposing of the estate with which God has blessed me according to my last will I do hereby declaim and publish this my last will and testament. In the first place I resign my body to dust and my soul to God and my wish is that after my death that my body be buried in a decent Christian like manner. I dispose of my worldly goods as such. My just debts are to be paid out of my personal property. Next I give and bequeath Elizabeth to have all my real and personal estate for and during her natural life and widowhood for the purpose of securing a comfortable maintenance for herself and those committed to her care except as herein after provided at and after her death or second marriage. It is my will that my son Hiram Skaggs shall have after the decease of myself and wife Elizabeth the E. 1/2 of S.E. Qr. of S. 21 T. 40, R. 7W. and that my son Asa P. Skaggs shall have and hold seventy six acres it being the land bought of Thomas Noblett and known as the North part of the West 1/2 of S.E. Ar. of S. 21 T. 40, and I also will to the heirs of my daughter Elisabeth Clemens five dollars to be given when called for. I also will to my grandson Henry Galloway five dollars. I also will that Linda Findly shall have of my estate a horse worth fifty dollars and a good saddle and bridle and one good bed and stead and choice of bed cloths and plenty of them provided she stays with us during our natural lives and the remainder of my personal property to be equally divided between my three children that are now living, towit: my son Hiram H. Skaggs, Asa P. Skaggs, and Charlotte Giesler. In case that I enter any more land joining that I will to Asa P.Skaggs, I wish him to have it also. I wish our graves to be walled in with stone in good and decent order three feet high. Made and given under my hand this 31st day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty five in the presents of the undersigned witness. (Signed) Henry (X) Skaggs. George remarried about 5 years after the death of Mary Ellen. George and Ronda are listed on the 1900 IndianTerritory Census with sons Jesse, age 6 and Floyd, age 4 months. George 43, is listed on the 1910 Hughes Co. OK Census living at Calvin with wife May 31 (this is the same person as "Rhoda" who was listed as George's wife on the 1900 census because this record shows that George and May have been married 12 years and have had 2 children), Jesse 17, Floyd 10, Florence 4 months, his mother Susan 67, and Eldie Mays 16 who is listed as a hired hand. He is listed on the 1920 Hughes Co. OK Census living at Calvin with a new wife, Susan 31, daughter Vera 3 years and 5 months. His mother,Susan 77, is still living with him. Also living with him is his step-son, Robert L. Cross 6. Living next to him is his son Floyd with his wife, Beulah, and an unnamed infant listed as 0/12, meaning the baby was just born (the census was dated Jan. 3, 1920). George and Sarah are listed on the 1930 Hughes Co. OK Census living at Stuart with their daughter Vera 13, Sarah's son, Robert Cross, 16 from a previous marriage, and George's mother Susan 87. George's son, Floyd, is living nearby with his wife Beulah, and children: Ruby 10 and Kenneth 6.

Jesse Swetnam was the only child of George Swetnam and Mary Ellen Clement. Mary Ellen died from complications of childbirth when Jesse was three weeks old. George Swetnam remarried about 1898. Jesse, age 6, is listed on the 1900 Indian Territory Census with his father, George and step-mother Ronda, and his half-brother Floyd, age 5 months. When he was 13 Jesse ran away from home briefly. The following notice was published in the local paper: $10 Reward. I will pay the above reward for the return, or any information that will enable me to secure the return of my son, Jessey Swetnam, who left home October 24,1 906. He is 13 years old, has large gray eyes and light hair. When he left he was riding a black mare pony 14 hands high, pacer and fox-trotter, branded 101 on left shoulder and 101 on left thigh. Any information will be appreciated. Please notify his father. GEORGE SWETNAM, Non, I. T. Jesse is listed on the1910 Hughes Co. OK Census with his father and step-mother. He is listed on the 1920 Hughes Co. OK Census with his wife, Ida, and three children: Carl 8, Lorene 7, and Ina E. 4 & 3 months. The following article was written about Jesse in the "Vernal Express" Vernal, Utah, Dec. 22, 1977. " Jake Swetnam raises mini-horses": Jesse W. Swetnam, better known as "Jake" in the Vernal-Lapoint area left Oklahoma in May of 1920 with his wife and three children travelling in a covered wagon. He worked in the wheat harvest at Wilmore, Kansas that summer, then went onto Laramie, Wyoming and worked in the hay that fall. Winter found him in Pierce, Colorado, where he was a member of the section gang for the Mo. Pacific Railroad. The next spring he left there and worked in the hay at North Park near Colmont, Colorado. The family lived next at Milner, Colorado and he worked on the section again that winter, 1921, for Moffat Railroad. He returned to North Park for the haying season the next summer and the Swetnam's fourth child, Billie, was born at Colemont. In 1922 he moved his family to Maeser in Utah, and spent the winter there, where he fed a horse drawn baler from a stack for Warren Slaugh for 35 cents a ton. Early the next spring he rented the Alf Johnson place and moved his family to Deep Creek, filing on a homestead in the spring of 1923. That fall the three older children cut, piled, and burned sagebrush, while Jake plowed with three horses on a walking plow. Come the next spring, he planted a good sized truck patch which yielded well, so he cleared and plowed more land and the next summer planted a good-sized "spud" patch and some early corn. In later years he hired spuds hauled to Roosevelt, and sold enough to pay up grocery bills, etc. Later he dug a pit 5' wide by 45' long and stored rutabagoes to feed cows. All this was raised by dry land-farming, without irrigation. He also herded sheep and went to North Park and worked in the hay for 10 summers, leaving his family to care for things at home. The last child, Gale, was born in a log cabin on the Hayden Foster farm between Lapoint and Tridell in 1828. Jake kept cows for a few years and raised corn, but due to unfavorable conditions got rid of them and went into the sheep and goat business. He ordered seed rye from Grand Junction, Colorado and began to plant it, utilizing every dip and valley that would catch extra rainfall, using it for spring pasture and latter cutting a hay crop. At one time Jake sold over a thousand dollars worth of goats to an Italian from Salt LakeCity to milk and make goat cheese. About two years later he sold another thousand dollars worth. About this time, Mrs. Swetnam, who had a bad heart, was told she must make a change in climate. So Jake sold the homestead to Clive Sprouse who turned it to N. J. Meagher for sheep range. Before making the big move, the family spent another winter on the homestead and waited until the fall of 1945 for cooler weather to make the trip to Arkansas. Mrs.Swetnam made the trip in good shape and lived until July 4, 1961. After her death, Jake sold the cattle, and having always liked horses, he bought some jennies and started raising minature mules, using a Welsh stallion. He is also cross-breeding Shetland ponies and a Hackney mare with a Jack. His big aim is to get a colt at 30", but the closest he has come to this is 32". He owns bigger stock, including an Appaloosa stallion, because he still likes to ride but, says he "doesn't find too much time." At 84, he continues to plow his garden with Jennies and raises a fine garden. He says staying busy is what keeps him going. He enjoys showing his animals to the many people that come along, some just to visit and others to buy or trade. He lives alone, with his three dogs for company and maintains he "plans to live to be 100." His two boys live in the community. Carl lives about 3 miles west of his Dad on 160 acres. Gail built near his Dad and works out. Ina teaches nursing at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. Lorene is in Lakewood, California. Billie is living at Lakeshore, Mississippi. All except Ina have married and raised families. Jesse's granddaughter, Julie Graves, daughter of his son Carl, shared the following : "Grandpa had a great sense of humor. I have a letter that he wrote to a Singles Club at the age of 84 advertising for a wife, but didn't find one. He lived alone til he was past 85. He broke his hip at some time and was not able to live alone after that. I can't remember when it was exactly because I was just a little kid. He lived with my sister, Carolyn, for a while before moving to Gulfport, Mississippi to live with another granddaughter where he died. Gramp's favorite pasttime was talking. I wish I could remember more of his stories about his past." Both Jesse and his wife, Ida are buried at Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery in the Monkey Run community in Baxter Co. Arkansas.

Etheldra is listed on the 1860 Lamar Co. TX Census with her parents and siblings. She is listed with her husband, William Clement on the 1870 Washington Co. AR Census. Living nearby are her parents, Edward and RhodaThompson, with their children, Mary, John, Kitten, Alfred, and Thomas. Etheldra and her husband moved to Texas within a few years after their marriage. Their first child, Robert was born in Arkansas, but the rest of their children were born in Texas. They lived in Wise and Jack Counties in Texas before moving to OklahomaTerritory about 1894. Etheldra and William had nine children. One son, William Marian, lived less than a month. The place of his burial is unknown. One daughter, Mary Ellen married George Swetnam and died giving birth to her only child. She was 18 years old. Twins (names of the infants are unknown) died at birth while the family was living in Jack Co. TX. They are buried beside their sister, Mary Ellen Clement Swetnam in the Wizard Wells Cemetery in Jack Co. TX. After the death of her husband in 1917, Etheldra made her home with her son, Charlie, and his family. She had her own room which was attached to the family house, but was accessable only through an outside door. Etheldra's granddaughter, Bessie, recalls that her grandmother was an excellent cook, and that she would bake special cookies to put in her son Charlie's lunch box to take to work. When Etheldra died in 1932, Charlie went to Macomb, OK and bought a casket for his mother, and his wife, Stella, washed and dressed Etheldra for her burial. The funeral was held in the front yard of Charlie and Stella Clement the day after her death, then she was taken to Lone Star Cemetery for burial next to her husband. In Etheldra's family Bible, she carefully recorded the births, marriages, and deaths of her family until the death of her husband. No other entries were ever made in her Bible after his death, except for the death of Etheldra, recorded in the handwriting of her daughter-in-law, Stella.

After the death of his father, Harvey William's mother, Eliza, married Andrew J. Gage January 24, 1906, in Elmore City, Garvin Go., OK. 1910 Garvin Co. The spelling of the family surname of Harvey William Clement, was changed to Clemons sometime after his mother married Andrew Gage. The probable reason for this is that John and William Clement, the two sons of Lucinda Gage Clement who had gone to Garvin Co. OK before statehood and became U. S. Marshals, changed the spelling of their surname from Clement to Clemons. When Lucinda's nephew, Andrew Gage married the widowed mother of Harvey William Clement, he was very young and probably thought that Clemons was the correct spelling for his name, and thus, Clement became Clemons. I found a website on Ancestry.com that was tracing the Dickey family and found information about the family of Elizabeth Catherine Lida Dickey and thus information about her five children - her two sons by her first husband, Frank Clement, and her three children by her second husband, Andrew Gage. According to that information, Harvey William Clemons died in Pauls Valley in February 25,1933, which is also the same date listed as the date of death for his mother. I don't know if this is a mistake, or if they actually died the same day. It is an interesting fact that needs to be explored. I did not find a census record for Harvey William Clemons for 1930. I did find a marriage record for him in the Garvin Co. OK marriage records. He married Cleo Harvell April 19, 1920.

Stella was the third born child of Lee and Arie Burden. She often talked about Clifty, Arkansas, her birthplace, even though she was only four years old, when her parents left Arkansas to move to IndianTerritory. In Indian Territory, Lee and Arie Burden settled first in the community of Mt. Zion, five miles northwest of Macomb in Pottawatomie County. Stella's father, Lee, was a farmer, but on weekends he played music for community dances on his fiddle and banjo. Stella would second for him on the piano. It was at these dances that Stella was courted by the handsome Charlie Clement. Lee Burden helped build a schoolhouse near their home and named it Mt. Zion. Stella and her older sister, Lizzie, attended school there. Stella graduated from the 8th grade at Tecumseh School about 1901. This qualified her for a teaching certificate. She had a brief teaching career. When she married Charlie, she became a homemaker and mother of nine children. Stella had weak lungs, damaged perhaps by TB at one time, the doctor thought. She was in ill health for a good many years, "as thin as a rail", but still managed to out live her husband by eleven years. After Charlie's death, Stella contintued to live at the home place as much as she could. Her son Bill lived with her part of the time, and sometimes her son Churchill would live with her for a while. Sometimes she would go to Chickasha to stay a few weeks with her daughter Arie, and to Lawton to spend a few weeks with her son Chief. If she was sick she would usually stay with her daughter Bessie or her daughter Annamae, both of whom lived close by. In 1973, Stella was extremely ill and she spent the entire winter with Bessie and her family. In 1976, Stella's condition became such that she had to be placed in the Shawnee Sunset Estates Nursing Home. She died June 18, 1976. The funeral was held at Romulus Baptist Church and she was laid to rest in Prarie View Cemetery beside her husband. There are many things about Stella that are memorable. Perhaps most memorable was her "trademark" apron. She always wore one and it had to have a pocket where she could keep her little container of snuff. She even had "Sunday Aprons". She had a love for "breast pins" and she often wore them pinned at the center front of her dress. She had long black hair that slowly turned gray, which she kept in tight braids that were wound into a coronet and pinned to the back of her head with long plastic hair pins and combs. She had a fabulous memory and could tell you the birthday of almost every person she knew, neighbors as well as family. One of her granddaughters-in-law was so impressed with Stella's memory of birthdays that she sent her a little red "birthday book" to write all of the birthdays down, because she said, "One of these days you will be gone and we need to preserve those dates."

James Tapp is the son of Della Clement and her first husband, Zachariah Tapp. Della married her second husband, Thomas Levi Clement, (her 1st cousin) in 1900 in Indian Territory and they are living nearby. What happened to Abraham after 1900 is not known for sure; however itis known that his daughter, Della, who had married his nephew, Thomas Levi Clement, had moved to Tishomingo, Indian Territory, as a couple of there children were born in Tishomingo before 1910. A record was found in "TheTishomingo News" dated Wednesday, May 24, 1906, relating the story of the stabbing death of Abe Clement "last night". A search was made of the Tishomingo newspaper and other county records, but no other mention of this incident could be found anywhere, except for a small article the following week saying that Albert Johnson appeared at a preliminary hearing of the charge of the murder of Abe Clement and that Johnson was committed to jail without bail. If this "Abe Clement" is our Abraham Clement is not known for sure. NOTE: A recent discovery by this writer that Abraham's eldest son, William, had a son named Abe who was killed at age 19 (some say in Red River Co. TX) may indicate that this "Abe Clement" may, in fact, be William's son, as a story recorded in the Johnston County OK history book states that William Clement moved to Tishomingo, Indian Territory, and that he served as an early day Territorial Sheriff of Tishomingo.

He is listed on the 1860 Lamar County Federal Census with his wife, Mary, and three sons, J.H., W.A., and T.J. in Precinct 1, Family 200-200, $500/725. Living in Princinct 1, Family 198-198 is his father William with his 2nd wife, Lavina, and four youngest children, H. H. (Hiram Harvey), E. (Ellen), Lydia, and William. When Andrew died the family must have been living in the Sylvan community as he is buried in the Sylvan Cemetery. Andrew and Mary's son, John, died three years later and is buried beside his father. Sylvan Cemetery is located east of Paris, Texas near the town of Blossom. 1880 Lamar Co. TX Census: Mary Clement 39, TN; Lee Clement 15; Robert 13; Richard 9. Mary survived her husband by more than twenty years. The family evidently moved from Sylvan communuity to the Shady Grove community located SE of Paris, Texas, about half way between Paris and Deport. When Mary died, she was buried beside her grandmother, Frances McClure, and near her step-mother-in-law, Lavinia Clement, in the Shady Grove Cemetery.

Margaret is listed on the 1850 Taylor Co. KY Census as "Margaret Cannon, age 90, born in VA." She is living in household # 245 in District #2. Living next to her on one side is her son John C. Skaggs and his family in household #244 and on the other side is Rebecca Blevins and her family in household #246. Her name is also listed on the 1860 Taylor Co. KY Census where she is again listed as Margaret Cannon, age 102. She is living in the household with Rebecca Blevins and family. Margaret's name appears in many Green Co. KY documents along with her first husband, David Skaggs. After his death she married John Cannon. The part of Green Co. KY where Margaret and her family lived becameTaylor Co. KY in 1848. Less than six years after her second marriage she filed a lawsuit in Taylor Co KY Circuit Court against her son,John C. Skaggs, and her son-in-law, Jesse Roberts, for a financial judgment. Court records show that on March 3, 1853, "the plaintiff, Margaret Cannon, alias Margaret Skaggs, appeared in court along with the defendant, Jesse Roberts, with their attorneys and submitted the law and facts in this cause to the judgement of the court without the interventions of a jury so far as said Roberts is concerned and the evidence heard. It is adjudged by the court that the defendant Roberts go hence hereof without delay and recover of the plaintiff his cousts herein expended." From this record it appears that Margaret lost her case against Jesse Roberts. However, it appears that she won the case against her son as the Court records also show the following: "The defendant John C. Skaggs, having been duly summoned and failing to answer, it is adjudged by the court that the plaintiff recover of the defendant John C. Skaggs one hundred and ten dollars therein at the rate of six percent per annum from the 29th day of January1840 until paid, also her costs herein expended. This payment is to have credit by fifty five dollars paid the 20th day of August 1841."

Charlie was born in Vinyard, Jack Co. TX, the youngest child of William and Etheldra Clement. The family moved to IndianTerritory, now Oklahoma, when he was a small boy. He is listed on the 1900 Indian Territory Census in Burnett Township, Pottawatomie Co. with his parents, Wiliam and Etheldra Clement, brother Riley, and sister Lillie. He is also listed on the 1910 Pottawatomie Co. OK Census with his wife Stella and and 6 month old infant, William L., called "Little Lee". Charlie and Stella are also listed on the 1920 Pottawatomie Co. OK Census with four children, Church (Churchill) age 7, Arie age 5, Ellenage 2, and Bessie age 4 months. William Clement was a farmer and the children helped with the farm work. As a result they attended school infrequently. Charlie only had a fourth grade education, but he was much wiser than many men who had much more education. His humor and overall good nature endeared him to everyone who knew him. In the Lone Star and Mount Zion communities located near present day Macomb, OK, Saturday night would find most everyone around attending a community dance. Music for the dances was usually provided by Lee Burden playing his fiddle or banjo, seconded on the piano by his daughter Stella. It was at these dances that Charlie courted Stella Burden, and it was also at one of these dances that seventeen year old Charlie Clement proposed to nineteen year old Stella Burden. Stella, who had been teaching school for two years, loved Charlie but she wanted to wait a year or two because she thought he was too young. But Charlie insisted that he was old enough to know what he wanted and it was marriage now, or he was going to leave and find work somewhere else. That convinced Stella, so she accepted his proposal of marriage. Charlie and Stella were married December18, 1907, just one month after Oklahoma had become a state. Their marriage is recorded in Pottawatomie County, OK records in Marriage Book 11, page 7. Recorded on the application for the marriage license is the infomation that written consent for the marriage was given by the groom's parents, because he was only 17 years old. Other information recorded on the marriage license states that the marriage was performed at the residence of R. H. L. Burden by T. B. Albert, a Justice of the Peace, from McLoud, OK. Witnesses whose names appear on the license are J.B. Moore, husband of the groom's sister, Lillie, and M.E. Ferree (Mary Ellen Ferree, also known as Aunt Sissie), sister of the bride'smother. Charlie and Stella lived in the Macomb area for about three years before moving to the area of Lexington in McClain Co. OK, where they would live for the next ten years. Tragedy struck the young family in 1913 when Charlie and Stella's firstborn child, William Lowell Lee Clement, became ill and died. They brought his body back to Pottawatomie County for burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery. He was laid to rest near the graves of his great-grandparents, Richard and Prudence Burden. A double tragedy was suffered by Charlie and Stella in 1917 when both of their fathers died just three months apart. William Clement died January 13, 1917 and Lee Burden died March 8, 1917. After William Clement's death, Charlie and Stella bought his father's farm and moved back to Pottawatomie County. Charlie's mother, Etheldra, lived with Charlie and Stella until her death fifteen years later. Charlie farmed the land, raising peanuts, sweet potatoes, and feed for the livestock. But he also worked for the railroad, working on the lines, replacing the ties and rails and such. It was very difficul twork and took it toll on Charlie's health. The first railroad he worked for was the Rock Island called "Old Beck". The main office was at Romulus. The second line he worked on was the Santa Fe that ran just north of the town of Macomb. In 1927, Charlie and Stella bought a farm four miles east of Macomb, near the Eagle School community. The house at the new home place consisted of a living room, one bedroom, and a kitchen. Charlie and Stella slept in the living room and the children all slept in the one bedroom. Charlie added one room onto the west side of the house that was Etheldra's room. After Etheldra died in 1932, Charlie moved her room to the north side of the house and it became the bedroom for the girls. Sometime in the later years, Charlie bought a small house and moved it to the home site, setting it to the south of the existing house, then building a small connecting room to attach it to the living room. The new addition became the living room with a bedroom on the east. The living room in the original house then became the kitchen. Those of us who were fortunate enough to remember the times spent with Charlie and Stella in their home can well remember the living room with its "one step down" from the living room to the small connecting room, then "one step down" into the kitchen. The Clement children attended school through the eighth grade at Eagle, then went to high school at Macomb. Eagle School was one mile east of the Clement home and the children had to walk to school. Macomb was four miles west of their home, and the two oldest children, Churchill and Arie, had to walk to school there too, but by 1931, when Ellen started to high school, Macomb had a school bus to pick them up each day. Growing up in the Clement household was lots of fun but also lots of work. Stella's health was bad, so a lot of the household chores were done by the three older girls. When Ellen and Bessie were in high school they did the laundry for the entire family; and if the weather on Saturday did not permit them to get the laundry out, they had to stay out of school one day during the week and get it done. Bessie said she always made good grades in school, but never got exempt from tests because she had too many absences. Wash day became a much easier chore when Charlie and Lelan made the girls a washing machine out of a barrel. He had seen one that another man had made on one of the family trips to McClain County to pick cotton. Lelan cut the top third off of a barrel and welded it to the bottom of the barrel, cut a hole in the newly welded section to stick wood into, and this bacame a firebox. At the top of the barrel he bolted a rod across the barrel. He took a 1x12 board, drilled holes in it, and bolted it onto the rod. He then attached a handle. The girls would swing the board back and forth to agitate the clothes. Bessie said it sure did get the clothes clean and was much easier than scrubbing them on a rub board. They still had to wring the clothes out by hand. The boys and Charlie would feed the livestock, milk the cows, and separate the milk. In the evenings, after supper, the family would settle in for an evening of fun. They would play dominos, fourty-two, or listen to Stella read "Shootum Ups" as Charlie called the western stories in "Wild West Weekly" that he loved so much. The neighbors often came by to join in the fun. In the summertime, the children worked in the field, hoeing peanuts, gathering fruit for canning, or helping in the garden. In the evening they often played ball in the road beside the house. We always hear stories about the difficulty of living through the depression of the 1930s. However, life for the Clements was pretty much the same as before the depression. They raised most of their own food, so they never went hungry, as many did. World War II brought much anxiety to the family, when three of the four boys were called to duty. Lelan went first in 1941, followed by Bill in 1943. Chief was called to report fo rservice the day Japan surrendered. In 1947 Charlie and Stella went to Fort Smith, Arkansas, where Charlie found work for a brief time, but they soon returned to the home place at Macomb. In 1951 they moved to Phoenix, Arizona for a year to try to improve Stella's health. They returned home in 1952. In 1955, Charlie was diagnosed with diabetes. His condition was pretty severe, requiring daily injections of insulin. The disease took its toll on Charlie. Poor circulation in his leg led to the amputation of his toe, then eventually his leg. His eyesight slowly failed, leaving him virtually blind by the time of his death. Charlie died January 30, 1965. It was a bitter cold day, the day of his funeral, which was held at Romulus Baptist Church. He was laid to rest in Prairie View Cemetery. His obituary which appeared in the Shawnee News Star reads as follows: CLEMENT -- Charlie Monroe Clement, 74, Rt. 2, Macomb, retired farmer, died at 1 a.m. Saturday in a Shawnee hospital following a two-year illness. He was born Aug. 23, 1890 in Vinyard, Texas. He moved to the Macomb area Jan. 1, 1894 from Vinyard. TX. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Churchill's sister, Bessie, recalls the day that Churchill and Irene were married. She said that several people accompanied Churchill and Irene to the preacher's house where they were married. They included his sisters, Ellen, Bessie, Arie, Arie's husband Mel, and Earl Blythe. They were all loaded into Mel's car and heading for the preacher'shouse when they stopped along the side of the road to help a stranded family whose car had stopped on them. Mel got out and began helping get the car started. Churchill was pacing up and down, telling Mel to hurry up. After getting the stranded family back on the road, the wedding party loaded up and proceeded on their way. Mel toldChurchill, "See there, we helped that family and we still have time to get you married." Churchill replied, "I ain't kicking, I ain't kicking." Sarah was 19 years old when her mother died. She was the oldest ofeight children that ranged in age from 4 months to her nineteen years. She undoubtly had a great responsibilty helping her father care forthe smaller children. Between 1850 and 1853 the family moved from Madison Co. AR to LamarCo. TX and all of the children can be found in Lamar Co. TX on the1860 Census except for Sarah and her youngest sister, Serena. It isbelieved that Serena, who was a newborn when her mother died in1850,also died soon after her mother. As for Sarah, it is a mystery. Shedoes not show up in Texas with the rest of her family at any time overthe next 20 years. She either married and stayed in Arkansas, or diedbefore 1860.

Bessie spent most of her life working for and serving others in he rcommunity. She served as secretery of the Macomb Alumni Association for over 40 years. She was Church Clerk for Romulus Baptist Church for many years. She is an actuve member of Tecumseh Chapter #30, Order of the EasternStar. She is a Past Matron of that Chapter, having served three times in that office. She also served as Grand Representative to Saskatchewan, Canada in 1985-86 and as a Grand Representative to Utah in 2007-2009. Her talents as a cook are appreciated by many. She has volunteered her time to cook for church camp for Romulus Baptist Church for over 30 years. She is often called up to bake a batch of cinnamon rolls or pies for fund raisers for school, clubs, and Eastern Star. For many years she cooked banquet meals for the FFA and for the Macomb Alumni Association. Bessie was honored in 2003 when she was chosen by the Macomb Centenniel Committee to be Co-Grand Marshall of the Macomb Centenniel Parade held on May 10, 2003. The Committee cited the fact that Bessie, at age 83, had lived her entire life in the Macomb area and had contributed so much of her life to the growth and betterment of the community, she was a natural choice for one of the Grand Marshals. Also, both sets of her grandparents, Richard and Arie Burden and William and Etheldra Clement, were among the earliest settlers in the Macomb area in the 1890s. Bessie researched the history of Macomb and wrote a history of the community to be published in a book containing histories of all of the towns in Oklahoma. She also wrote articles for publication in the Shawnee News Star, the Pottawatomie County News, and the Oklahoma Sands newspapers prior to the Centenniel about her memories of early life in the Macomb Community.

William was listed as four years old on the 1850 Madison Co. AR Census with his father and his siblings. His mother had died earlier in the year. He was also listed on the 1860 Lamar Co.TX Census with his father and stepmother, along with his brother Hiram Harvey and his sisters, Ellen and Lydia. William is listed on the 1870 Washington Co. AR Census with his wife Etheldra. They were married in April of that year in Washington Co. AR. After their marriage, William and Etheldra moved to Texas where both had lived previously (in Lamar Co.), but this time they moved to Wise Co. TX. They are listed on the 1880 Wise Co. Census with three children, Robert, Levi, and Ellen. Living in the next household was John Clement with his wife, daughter, mother-in-law, and his brother William. John and William Clement were the sons of his cousin, Andrew Clement who was killed in the Civil War. William and Etheldra moved to Jack Co. TX before 1887. Their last two children, Lillie and Charlie, were born in Jack Co. and their eldest daughter, Ellen, died there in 1893. Found in the Public Library in Jacksboro, Jack Co. TX, was a softbound book entitled " Drouth Sufferers in Jack County -1887". Listed is the following information: "Clements, W., No. in family 6, Commissioner's Precinct 1, No. lbs. flour recd 150, No. lbs. meal recd. 228, date recd. 16 May 1887. This confirms that William and Etheldra were living in Jack Co. in 1887 and probably had been living there for perhaps a year at least to qualifiy for "drouth relief". Another important piece of family history was found in the Jack Co. Library in a softbound book of listings of persons buried in the Wizard Wells Cemetery located at "Old Vineyard" in Jack County. Listed as buried in this cemetery are the following: (1) Clements, Infants of Etheldra and W. Clements - no birth or death dates (2) M.E. Swetnam, wife of G.H. Swetnam, d. 24 Sep 1893 Mary Ellen is buried beside the twins of Etheldra and William who are buried in one grave. These graves are very distinctly marked. They are raised above the ground with granite blocks, stacked two blocks high, and the length of the graves, with the tombstone on each grave embedded in the front of the granite that is at the head of the graves. The tombstones are still readable. On the twins tombstone, engraved in letters about 5 inches tall at the top of the stone is "INFANTS". Below that is "of Etheldra and W. Clements". About 1894 the family moved to Oklahoma Territory. They are listed on the 1900 Oklahoma Territory Census in Burnett Township with their children Riley, Lillie, and Charlie. Living nearby are the families of Richard Burden, William Burden and Richard Henry Burden. In 1910, the first Census for the State of Oklahoma lists William and Etheldra in the Burnet Township of Pottawatomie Co. Neighbors were the family of Richard Henry Lee Burden and the Charlie Clement family.

William Wesley Clement's name is found on the 1828 and 1830 Gasconade Co. MO Tax Lists., He married Elizabeth Skaggs in Crawford County, Mo in 1829. William Wesley's grandfather, Richard Skaggs, and Elizabeth's great-grandfather, Henry Skaggs, were brothers. (Richard and Henry Skaggs were famous "LongHunters" in Kentucky who were among the first white settlers in Kentucky and much has been written about them in Kentucky History books.) William Wesley and Elizabeth Clement are listed on the 1830 Crawford Co. MO Census living with his brother Abraham Clement and family. By 1840, he had moved to Arkansas. He is listed on the 1840 Carroll Co. AR Census living in Osage township. He is listed on the 1850 Madison Co. AR Census living in War Eagle Township. The census was taken after August, since his wife is not listed, and she had died in August, 1850. Living with William Wesley in his household in 1850 were his eight children, ranging in age from 4 months to 19 years old. Between 1850 and 1853 William Wesley and his family moved to Lamar Co.TX. He married a second time in that county on 14 Jun 1853. His sons, Andrew and Abraham, married in Lamar Co.TX in the two succeeding years. William Wesley is listed on the1860 Lamar Co. TX Census with his new wife and four of his children, Hiram Harvey, Ellen, Lydia, and William. The youngest child, Severno ( Serena) is not listed, so it is assumed that she had died. During the next decade, two of William Wesley's sons, Andrew and Hiram Harvey, served in the Confederate Army in Texas. Hiram Harvey married in 1862, Ellen married in 1864, and Lydia married in 1865. In 1867, his second wife, Lavinia died. It is not known for sure what happened to William Wesley after that. It is believed by this writer that he died in Lamar Co. TX sometime after the death of his second wife in 1867 and even though there is no marked grave for him next to Lavinia in Shady Grove Cemetery, Lamar Co. TX, there is a space that could be his grave between Lavinia and his daughter-in-law, Mary Clement and I believe he is buried there. (lkcl)
