In 1841 with parents at Sidney (Sydney) Street, aged 4
21 Nov 1857, John Brockbank (29, father unknown) of Peel Street an engine tenter, married Mary Ann Mather (21), of Sydney Street, daughter of James Mather a weaver at St Andrew´s Presbyterian Church, Bowker´s Row.
After Mary Ann maried John Brockbank, they lived in Everton. They were there in 1861, but with no children.
We find Mary Ann getting re-married in Birkenhead RO in 1900, daughter of James Mather a Cotton Spinner. She was living at 12 Shaw Street, Seacombe with a master grocer.

The mother of John was either Mercy Grime (married 30 June 1833), Martha Austin (married 30 Dec 1833) or Mary Heaton (married 20 Nov 1836). The marriage to Mercy shows James a widower, whilst the others are for a bachelor.
Married in the presence of John Grime, Probably Mary's brother (or else less likely father).
Living at Salford, Bolton in 1841.
Died 1852 at Sydney Street, Great Bolton

James
Mather
67
67
James Mather (1797-1864) is the older brother of Nanny Mather, son of James Mather and Happy Lomax.
James's first wife, Mary died aged 24 in 1827. Three years later, James (now shown as a Widower) married a pregnant Jane Dakin, who gave James a daughter, also Jane. His young wife Jane also died, possibly giving birth or very soon after! Their daughter Jane also died after 6 months.
James was on the 1831 L.B. Poor List, living at Blackburn Street (same as his mother in 1811).
James, who already had two infant sons, married a much younger Mercy Grime in 1833, a year after his second wife Jane had died. Their first son William was born soon after. Daughter Esther Mather born 1840 confirms MMN = GRIME.
On the 1841 census, James and Mercy (35 and 30) were living in Sidney Street (see map). His son William (9) was listed first below the parents followed by John (15) and Samuel (12) from his earlier marriages, and then their three daughters, Ellen, Mary Ann and Esther (6, 4 & 1).
In 1851, James and Marcy (51 & 41) are at Back Sydney Street. All their children were with them: William (17), Ellen (16), Mary Ann (14) and Esther (10). Neighbours were William and Jane Booth (41 & 44). I have DNA matches to both families, possibly because James's sister Nanny Mather married Richard Booth in 1825.
He was a Presbyterian, and some of the family used St. Andrews in Bolton. His oldest son John became a sucessful beer seller, running the Rothwell Street Tavern in Bolton.
His daughter Mary Ann lived at 12 Shaw Street, Seacombe when she re-married in 1900.
3 July 1864 James Mather of Lever Street died, aged 68. His death was recorded in the Bolton Chronical.

69
William (aged 9 so born 1832) is placed out of order in the 1841 census, but was baptised 1832 son of James and Mercy. John (15) and Samuel (12) are then listed from his previous marriage, followed by the three daughters.
In 1859, William married Martha Smith. (This is the only Bolton marriage to a Martha, and the 1852 Manchester marriage to Martha Robert is probably too early).
In 1861, William Mather (27), and his wife Martha (22) are at 18 Milk Street with their first son William Thos (6 mo). They stayed in Western Bolton till about 1869, and after then the children's births are registered in Little Bolton.
In 1871, Martha (32) and William T (10) are lodging at 5 Nelson Court, Little Bolton. Martha has returned to using her maiden name SMITH, and husband William is missing. However in November 1871 daughter Martha Alice Mather is baptised, with address Nelson Court, Little Bolton.
In 1869, Herbert was baptised. The baptism records with parents named. However BMD records show the mother as SMITH and burial records confirn the father is WILLIAM.
William and Martha moved from West Bolton to Little Bolton 1868 or 1869, as Herbert and Martha were born (and baptised) in L.B.

Living at Sidney (Sydney) Street with parents in 1841, aged 1 year, and 1851 aged 10.
In 1861, after her parents death, Esther (20) was living with her uncle John & Mary Grime.
After 1861, Esther may have married or died at Prestwich, Bury in 1861 (20) or Walmersley, Bury in 1870 (30), but no Bolton marriages:
1861 Thomas Molyneux @ St Helens - Father James
1865 George Bentham @ Chorley - NO father is Robert)
1868 William Archer @ Liverpool - NO Father is John
Esther may have died in 1870, aged 30. However this may be one of two other Esther Mathers born in Bury in 1840 (MMN = HALL) and 1841 (MMN = NUTTALL).

Samuel
Mather
46
46
Born: Salford, Bolton
In 1841, Samuel (12) was living with his parents and family at Sidney Street, East Bolton.
21 Oct 1849, Samuel (22) married Mary Ann Moore (22, widow). Mary Ann had only been married to Jonathan Moore for two year befores he died, aged 23. Thomas & Mary Bailey were witness.
In 1851, Samuel and Mary Ann (24 & 23) were living in Lum Street, East Bolton. Samuel was a cotton spinner. Mary Ann was from Preston.
In 1851 Samuel and his wife Mary Ann were violently attacked in Lever Street, G.B., just 30 yard from his home. Peter Ashworth, the offender, was sent for trial for GBH at the Liverpool assizes. Peter Ashworth must have been a good customer as Mr Samuel Haworth of the White Horse Inn and Mr Joseph Bently of the Falcon Inn who posted bail of £100 each.
In 1861, Samuel and Mary Ann (35 & 34) were living in Venture Street East Bolton (near the Holy Trinity Church), still with no children
In 1871 Samuel (45) was lodging at 124 Lever St., Little Bolton, Holy Trinity Church district (still married, not widowed). His wife, Mary Ann Mather was also lodging at another address in the same district. Head of house was Nancy Marther (54 born Tockholes) with her daughter Elizabeth from Preston.

His father was probably William Brockmank (1791-1859) who died in Liverpool. As well as the other children, John and Mary had children three Williams, but they all died young.

In 1881, Martha (45, Widow, b. Bolton) has a son William Thos Mather (20, b. Bolton) and a son Moses Rostron, but his parents were Mary Pickup and Henry Rostron from Oswaldtwistle, Preston. They married in 1868 and Moses born about 1870. Henry died and it appears Martha may have adopted Moses. Did Martha leave William and lead a double life? William may have lived on till 1901.

Not quite sure who Mary Ann Moore was married to as difficult to read father's name (on 1829 marriage cert). Her witnesses in 1849 were Thomas and Mary Bailey, and thay may have been recently married and be close friends. They appear to have married at Bolton in May 1845 and it was Jonathan Moore who was their witness, so they were returning the favour.
Jonathan Moore died in 1848, aged 23. This fits perfectly as Mary Ann Moore, Widow was 22 in 1849 and she was born in Preston but living in Bolton.
