John's father was Jonathan Mather and his mother was Mary Leaver. His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Martha Kay. He had two brothers and a sister, named Amos, James and Mary. He was the oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named William and Jane.
