James was born in August 1787 in Entwistle and his baptism took place on April 10th, 1785 at St. Peter's (Bolton).¹

  This is NOT the James Mather son of James and Isable, baptised 1876. That is another James that died aged 1, and then they had another James that died aged 8.
  
  This is not the James Mather born 1785, son of James and Betty.

James' father was Isaac Mather and his mother was Alice Fielding. His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Ann Howarth. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Solomon, John, Joseph, Ann, Esther, Alice and Nancy. He was the oldest of the eight known children. He died from a stroke, Paralysis, at the age of 54 on September 3rd, 1841 in Entwistle.²

General Notes
- James was born about 9 months after his parents married (before Sept if 54 when died)..
  
  James & Rachel have a DNA match to Paul Mather, but NOT me.
  
  James's first son is also James, and both were farmers at Entwistle, probably the same farm !
  
  In 1804, a Private James Mather, enlisted in the army, aged about 18. He was discharged in 1818. This is another!
  
  Weaver when children got baptised (e.g. Charles).
  
  In Jun 1841, James and Rachel (both 54) are farmers at Sunnyside, Entwistle. Also shown as farmer from Entwistle on son Isaac's marriage in 1839 (so possibly the wrong marriage). With them were their younger children Nancy, Jane, Sarah, Andrew and Maria (24, 22, 18, 17, & 11), and also two illegitimate grandchildren Abel and John (5mo & 1mo).
  
  3 Sep 1841, James Mather died of paralysis (i.e. stroke). Jenny Mather of Entwistle was present at the death (of her father).
  
  In 1892, his youngest daughter Maria remaried (aged 63). She recorded her father as John (not James) Mather, a Farmer.

  From before 1839 his occupation was Farmer in agriculture in Entwistle. He died in September 1841 while still employed there.
