James was born in 1808 in Turton and his baptism took place about 1808 at Walmsley Presbyterian.1  James' father was James Mather and his mother was Rachel Hamer.  His paternal grandparents were Isaac Mather and Alice Fielding; his maternal grandparents were John Hamer and Mary (Mally) Bury. He had five brothers and five sisters, named John, Charles, Isaac, Andrew, Andrew, Ann, Nancy, Jane, Sarah and Maria.  He was the oldest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 70 on June 28th, 1878 in Entwistle.  He was buried on July 1st, 1878 at St. Anne (Turton).2 3

‌James and Martha were married in a religious ceremony on April 23rd, 1832 in Bolton by Vicar J Slade and witnessed by Jonathan Isherwood & James Siperot.7  They had six sons and two daughters, named John, Jonathan, Amos, Eli, Abraham, James, Sarah and Nancy.
