Maria's father was James Mather and her mother was Rachel Hamer.  Her paternal grandparents were Isaac Mather and Alice Fielding; her maternal grandparents were John Hamer and Mary (Mally) Bury. She had six brothers and four sisters, named James, John, Charles, Isaac, Andrew, Andrew, Ann, Nancy, Jane and Sarah.  She was the youngest of the eleven children.  She died at the age of 65 in May 1895 in Blackburn.  She was buried on June 5th, 1895.^3 4
