Sarah's father was James Mather and her mother was Rachel Hamer. Her paternal grandparents were Isaac Mather and Alice Fielding; her maternal grandparents were John Hamer and Mary (Mally) Bury. She had six brothers and four sisters, named James, John, Charles, Isaac, Andrew, Andrew, Ann, Nancy, Jane and Maria. She was the nineth oldest of the eleven children. She died at the age of 67 on August 27th, 1890 in Darwen. Her burial was in August 1890 in Darwen.³
