Jenny, known as Jane, was born on September 17th, 1819 in Edgworth and her baptism took place on September 30th, 1821 at Walmsley Presbyterian.¹

Jane's father was James Mather and her mother was Rachel Hamer. Her paternal grandparents were Isaac Mather and Alice Fielding; her maternal grandparents were John Hamer and Mary (Mally) Bury. She had six brothers and four sisters, named James, John, Charles, Isaac, Andrew, Andrew, Ann, Nancy, Sarah and Maria. She was the seventh oldest of the eleven children.
