Joseph's father was James Mason and his mother was Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Tootel. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, John, William, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the youngest of the six children. He had a half-sister named Mary.  He died at the age of 69 on February 11th, 1943.
