John was born in 1865 in Sharples.1  John's father was James Mason and his mother was Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Tootel. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, William, Joseph, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the six children. He had a half-sister named Mary.
