William was born in April 1867 in Sharples and his baptism took place on April 10th, 1867 at St. Paul's (Astley Bridge).1 2  William's father was James Mason and his mother was Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Tootel. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, John, Joseph, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the second youngest of the six children. He had a half-sister named Mary.  He died at the age of 1 in October 1868 in Sharples.  He was buried on December 10th, 1868 in Astley Bridge.3 1
