Eleanor was born about 1246 in Bernard Castle, Gainford, Durham, England.  Eleanor's father was Regent John de Baliol I of Scotland and her mother was Dervorgilla MacDougal de Galloway.  Her paternal grandparents are Hugh de Baliol and Cecily de La Fontaine; her maternal grandparents were Alan de Galloway and Princess Margaret Huntingdon of Scotland. She had a brother and four sisters, named John, Cecilia, Ada, Eupheme and Euphemia. She has a half-sister named Maud.
