Richard FitzGilbert was born in 1085 in Hereford, Herefordshire, England.  Richard FitzGilbert's father was Earl Gilbert FitzRichard de Clare I of Hertford and his mother was Alice de Claremont.  His paternal grandparents were Earl Richard FitzGilbert de Clare and Rohese Giffard; his maternal grandparents were Count Hugh de Creil de Clermont and Margaret de Roucy. He had three brothers and five sisters, named "Strongbow", Baldwin FitzGilbert, Hervey, Agnes, Alice, Margaret, Hawise and Rohesia FitzGilbert. He had a half-brother named John.  He died at the age of 51 on April 15th, 1136 in Abergavenny, Monmouth, Wales.

‌Richard FitzGilbert and Adeliza were married in a religious ceremony before 1116.  They had two sons and two daughters, named Robert FitzRichard, Roger, Rohese and Alice de Tonbridge.
