Roger was born in 1116 in Tunbridge Castle, Kent, England.  Roger's father was Lord Richard FitzGilbert de Clare and his mother was Adeliza de Meschines of Chester.  His paternal grandparents were Earl Gilbert FitzRichard de Clare I of Hertford and Alice de Claremont; his maternal grandparents were Earl Ranulph ("de Briquessart") de Meschines III of Chester and Countess Lucy Taillebois of Chester. He had a brother and two sisters, named Robert FitzRichard, Rohese and Alice de Tonbridge.  He was the second oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Roger and Isobel.  He died at the age of 57 in 1173 in Oxfordshire, England.  He was buried in Eynsham Priory, Oxfordshire, England.


Roger's family with Maud de St. Hilary

‌Roger and Maud were married in a religious ceremony about 1153 in Dalling, Norfolk, England.  They had a son and three daughters, named Richard, Aveline, Mabel and Elena.
