John was born about 1212 in Bernard Castle, Gainford, Durham, England.  John's father is Hugh de Baliol and his mother is Cecily de La Fontaine.  His paternal grandparents were Lord Eustace de Baliol of Gainford and Agnes de Percy; his maternal grandparents are Seigneur Aleaume Fontaine of Longpre & Fontaines and Laurett Saint Wallery. He had a sister named Ada.  He was the younger of the two children.  He died in Bernard Castle, Gainford, Durham, England.  He was buried in New Abbey, Galloway, Wigtownshire, Scotland.
