Gwynolda was born about 1134 in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland.  Gwynolda's father was Earl Waltheof of Dunbar and her mother was Sigrid de Allerdale.  Her paternal grandfather was Earl Gospatric I of Northumberland or Dunbar and her paternal grandmother is Princess Aethelreda of England; her maternal grandfather is Maldred de Carlyle.  She is an only child.

‌Gwynolda and Uchtred were married in a religious ceremony about 1156 in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland.  They had two sons and a daughter, named Dolphin, Roland and Eva.
