Aelgifu was born in Wessex, England.  Aelgifu's father was King Aethelred ("the Unready" (without counsel)) II of the English and her mother was Elfreda.  Her paternal grandparents were King Edgar ("the Peaceful") of the English and Aelfthryth; her maternal grandparents are Thored Gunnarsson of North Umbria and Hilda. She had two brothers and a sister, named "Ironside", of England and of England. She had a half-brother and four half-sisters, named Ingelric, Godgifu Goda, Adgina, Godgifu and Ealdgyth.


Aelgifu's first family with Ealdorman Ughtred Northumbria of Northumberland

‌Aelgifu and Ughtred were married in a religious ceremony about 1010 in England.  They had a daughter named Ealdgyth.


Aelgifu's second family with King Aelfgar of the East Saxons

‌Aelgifu and Aelfgar were married in a religious ceremony about 1027.  They had two daughters named Eadgyth and Ealdgyth.
