Aelfgar was born about 1002 in Mercia, England.  Aelfgar's father was Earl Leofric III of Mercia and his mother was Godgifu of Mercia.  His paternal grandfather was Earl Leofwine I of Mercia and his paternal grandmother is Countess Alwara Athelstansdotter of Mercia; his maternal grandparents are Thorold of Lincoln and Edith Malet. He had a brother and a sister, named "Le Wac" and Erminhild.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had a half-sister named daughter.  He died in Mercia, England.  He was buried in Coventry, Warwickshire, England.

‌Aelfgar and Aelgifu were married in a religious ceremony about 1027.  They had two daughters named Eadgyth and Ealdgyth.

They had a daughter named Lucy.
