Maldred was born about 1015 in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland.  Maldred's father was Lord Crinan ('Grimus') de Isles and his mother is Princess Bethoc mac Máel Coluim of Scotland.  His paternal grandparents were Lord Duncan Mormaer de Isles & Athol and Sibyl Biornsson; his maternal grandfather was King Malcolm II of Scotland & Alba and his maternal grandmother is Aelgifu Sigurdsdotter. He had a brother and a sister, named "the Gracious" and of Scotland.  He died  due to died in battle in 1045.

‌Maldred and Ealdgyth were married in a religious ceremony about 1036.  They had three sons named Gospatric, Maldred and Fergus.
