Roland was born about 1164 in Galloway, Perthshire, Scotland.  Roland's father was Lord Uchtred MacDonald of Galloway and his mother is Gwynolda of Dunbar.  His paternal grandfather was Lord Fergus MacDonald of Galloway and his paternal grandmother is Princess Joan Elizabeth Plantagenet of England; his maternal grandparents were Earl Waltheof of Dunbar and Sigrid de Allerdale. He had a brother and a sister, named Dolphin and Eva.  He was the youngest of the three children.  He died in December 1200 in Northamptonshire, England.  He was buried in Abbey Of Saint Andrew, Northamptonshire, England.

‌Roland and Elena were married in a religious ceremony about 1185 in Kirkoswald, Cumberland, England.  They had two sons and two daughters, named Alan, Alan, Devorgilla and Devorgulle.
