David was born about 1084.  David's father was King Malcom III ("Ceanmor", "Longneck", "Bighead") of Scotland and his mother was Princess Margaret ("the Exile", "Atheling") of Wessex.  His paternal grandparents were King Duncan ("the Gracious") I of Scotland or Strathclyde and Aelflaed Sybilla FitzSwiward of Northumbria; his maternal grandparents were Prince Edward ("the Outlaw", "Atheling") of England and Princess Agatha von Brunswick. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Ethelred, Aethelred, "the Fierce", Mary, "Atheling" and Thora. He had two half-brothers named Duncan and Heth Aethelred.  He died on May 24th, 1153 in Carlisle.  He was buried in Dunfermline Abbey.

‌David and Matilda were married in a religious ceremony in 1113.  They had a son named Henry Canmore.
