Ellen was born in 1809 in Breightmet and her baptism took place on June 18th, 1809 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Ellen's father was John Mather and her mother was Ann Brabin.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Thornley. She had three brothers and nine sisters, named James, Thomas, Martha, Betty, Alice, Hannah, Mary, Sarah, Margaret, Mary, Mary and Jane.

‌Ellen and Joseph were married in a religious ceremony on March 21st, 1830 at St. Peter's (Bolton) by Curate Thomas Fogg and witnessed by Henry Twist & James Liptrot.3   They had seven sons and a daughter, named Josiaha, William, Joseph, Peter, John, James, Joseph and Ann.  There are no more children.
